Bumbling professor Ned Brainard accidentally invents flying rubber, or "Flubber", an incredible material that gains energy every time it strikes a hard surface. It allows for the invention of shoes that can allow jumps of amazing heights and enables a modified Model-T to fly. Unfortunately, no one is interested in the material except for Alonzo Hawk, a corrupt businessman who wants to steal the material for himself.

A delightful Disney Sci-Fi-Comedy that's more fun to watch than it really should be with it's dated effects and linear plot. It's one my mother enjoyed as a kid with her grandfather so she enjoyed showing it to me when I was a little kid. It's without a doubt one that makes you think 'What If?' and one of Disney's better early live-action flicks.
The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) Der fliegende Pauker
Hier geht es um einen verrückten Professor, der einen Anti-Schwerkraft-Schleim erfindet, der fliegen kann!
Prof. Ned Brainard: Mal sehen, fliegendes Gummi... Flubber!
I know I've watched this when I was younger cause I loved that dog and that the special effects were fun. But this time round I was more annoyed with it. Think mostly of the Professor, even though I love the actor. Still very silly and fun.
🏀 And being March Madness I got to watch a basketball game in something
The original version of Flubber, The Absent-Minded Professor stars Fred MacMurray as the title character who invents flying rubber, called Flubber. Both movies are as dumb as they sound (as they both feature a dumb protagonist who's obsession with science causes him to skip his wedding three times and they both have a scene where he uses Flubber to cheat in a high school basketball game), but this one is slightly more laughable. Fred MacMurray bits the bill better than Robin Williams, I enjoyed the dog as a supporting character over than creepy lusty robot in the remake, and this version features Keenan Wynn and Ed Wynn.
Do you remember the film Flubber from 1997? You know, the one with Robin Williams, Wesley Crusher, Dewey Cox's father, Christian Grey's mother, and Shooter McGavin? Written by John Hughes, who was at the time lost in slapstick-inspired shit (or slapshit, as Doug Walker, the Nostalgia Critic, likes to call it) following the success of the first two Home Alone films? Doesn't ring a bell? Well, I'm not here to talk about Flubber. I'm here to talk about this film, the one Flubber was remaking. Although it's not one of Disney's best, The Absent-Minded Professor offers enough innocent fun, heart, and amusing set pieces to come out a perfectly fine sci-fi/fantasy comedy, along with solid direction from Mary Poppins helmer Robert Stevenson and a strong lead performance from a likable and sympathetic Fred MacMurray.
Sporting some enjoyable physical comedy and amusing special effects, Robert Stevenson's "The Absent-Minded Professor" is a light-weight sci-fi-com whose legacy may be more solid than the actual film. Starring Fred MacMurray as the titular academic, the film follows as his Ned Brainard invents a substance that has comedic applications. As with seemingly every live-action Disney film of this era, nefarious business dealings add unnecessary complications to the plot and turn everything a stale shade of vanilla. The film is fun at its core, however, and that makes all the difference.
OG Flubber, it's rubber that can somehow make cars fly. There's a lot of fun to be had with these wild 60's Disney flicks. Pretty decent special effects make for the bouncy putty to set up some classic situational humor. I think for a couple one off gags the fly car stuff works, but man do they lean on that heavy in the third act, and that's kind of where I stopped paying attention.
"The Shaggy Dog" could have been a one-off, but it was enough of a hit that Fred MacMurray pretty much abandoned the more serious-minded fare of his earlier career and made almost exclusively family films for Disney through the rest of his life as a film actor. This was always one of my very favorites as a kid, and its quaint charms still deliver thanks to some lo-fi but effective special effects. The black & white film stock goes a long way. I was terrified when I grabbed this blu-ray and saw the front cover as well as all the back pictures in bright vibrant color. I couldn't fathom Disney releasing a physical copy of the colorized version that I saw…
Betsy….. girl. Ned is NOT marriage material. he is an absolute selfish nightmare flake of a man. Shelby is sortof a jerk but at least he shows up on time and respects when you say no. Love is not enough to overcome how badly Ned treats you
keenan wynn mvp + composer george burns (he IS a certain era of disney movie to me 🥰🙏🏻) + the special effects team! effects are good!! really charming whenever anybody jumps and the flying car looks great
