A wonderfully wacky live-action cartoon that’s good enough to restore your faith in second chances, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” doesn’t just improve on 2014’s reboot of the ’80s most inexplicably un-killable franchise — it atones for it. Goofy where the previous installment was gritty, and graceful where the previous installment was chaotic, this sequel is such a huge step in the right direction that it may be more accurate to think of it as a mulligan.

I sort of enjoyed this for the same reasons I got a kick out of the Stephen Sommers G.I. JOE movie. It's stupid, garish nonsense, and an almost perfect rendering of its baffling and absurd cartoon source. If I were eight this would be my favorite thing (I was never very smart).

The design of these Turtles is so busy and chaotic it only just dawned on me on this viewing that they wear shorts to cover their nether regions. Gone is the belt with no pants look — which is kind of ironic give this sequel’s title.

Out of the Shadows is an improvement over the last Ninja Turtles movie, but only in the way that a mild cold is an improvement over the flu. It’s not good, but at least it’s not so terrible that it makes you want to lie in bed for a few days.
