In 1999, I worked at a video rental called Dwayne's World. This was around the time when locals would pick up a DVD and bring it to the counter, and we'd have to say: "This is a DVD. It doesn't play on your VCR." Because 9 times out of 10; they'd return it exclaiming that we accidentally loaned them a video game rather than a movie. Aw, yes, 1999.
At this video rental - Dwayne forced us to only watch the movies that weren't renting. This meant having to work a 6 hour shift with movies on repeat sometimes for a month at a time. I learned to view these movies more like albums. I'd catch snippets of each movie,…

Marisa Coughlan is the MVP here because she has to stand there and be told she’s a bad actor by Helen Mirren like three different times and if that doesn’t kill a bitch she must be invincible tbh
I’ma go ahead and be the one of us (like, the only one out of all of us….on earth, apparently lmao) to give this a solid 3.5 stars and a heart. I think this kinda rules??
Only even watched it because, even tho I think he’s generally a hack who got lucky with the Scream franchise and coasted on Wes’ talents and the actors’ charms, I’m interested enough in late 90s teen cinema rn that I wanna see everything Kevin Williamson wrote…

Teaching Mrs. Tingle might have the realest five star rating I've given out this month, because I was left speechless by the end of it. Katie Holmes leads Kevin Williamson's first and only directorial work in a role similar to her own on his teen drama hit, Dawson's Creek -- if they made it any further into the college years, I could totally see them throwing this plotline in there. It's really sad to me seeing that this was a box-office bomb and that most of the critics hated it, because it genuinely isn't a terrible black comedy. Loved all of these characters and the way they interacted, and while all of this is ridiculously dark, it was fun! Deserves cult classic status at the very least.
KEVIN WILLIAMSON RANKED

A dark comedy that neither witty nor particularly dark.
Now THAT'S irony!

Fun throwback movie. Fabulous performance by Helen Mirren, she eats this role up and leaves no crumbs. Would’ve loved if Kevin Williamson directed more movies.

the 2.4 average rating dear lord y’all are so boring!!! is it not enough to see helen mirren in a 90s teen movie? cunty as hell???

A tone-shifting thriller that never decides if it wants to be a dark comedy, violent melodrama, or high school wish-fulfillment fantasy, Kevin Williamson's "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" is a watchable but misshapen piece of work. Following a group of high school seniors that takes things too far when it attempts to make amends with a particularly cantankerous teacher, Williamson's film can not find its identity, seemingly trying to ape the spirit of the writer-director's previous ventures. Still, the film boasts a pleasant cast and enough moments to make it almost work.
Revolving around the titular Mrs. Tingle and a misguided attempt to make her listen to reason, the narrative involves home-imprisonment, grade chasers, and the inopportune use of a crossbow. There…

The movie would’ve been slightly better if Darren Stein directed it. Also, how did Mrs. Tingle use the bathroom for all those days? 🍎

I remember the trailer for this film back in the day. I thought it looked pretty good, yet i never saw it. And now 23 years later I'm really not sure what I just watched. A college thriller, edgy slapstick, coming of age drama, love triangle romance? All of those and nothing. It's unfocused but not in a good way. And I'm a sucker for late 90s films like this, largely thanks to Kevin Williamson. It's just so uneven, nonetheless the cast do a good job of carrying it and they probably elevated it a little too. Helen Mirren is good value, in particular.
Those alt-rock needle drops though! Soooo 90s.

I think there is a germ of a good idea in here, but Kevin Williamson was obviously high on his own supply after Scream/Dawson's Creek and took the wrong lessons from I Know What You Did Last Summer-- namely that he could half-ass a script and still have it make money, and that he was ready to direct. As for the latter, he's not totally incompetent but there's certainly no style or visual creativity on display. As for the script/plot, it just seemed weak. It's not exciting enough to work as a thriller, and not funny or daring enough to be a real black comedy.
So it falls to the actors to try and drag this over the finish line.…

Kevin Williamson's only directorial effort and it's not hard to see why. One of those goofy teen comedies that's intended to develop into something murkier. The casting certainly doesn't help, the flat teen soap actors can't bridge two disparate tones and it doesn't have much to say anyways.
Leigh Ann (Holmes) desperately needs to be the valedictorian in order to receive a scholarship. She's fighting at the top rung with another student, a prissy know-it-all who's never received a grade lower than an A. The deciding factor for #1 status is their history teacher, Mrs. Tingle (Mirren), a hateful tyrant who delights in routinely humiliating her students. Also at her mercy are Leigh Ann's aspiring actress best friend Jo and…
