  Like truly a 90's-style artifact: dopey, earnest, slick-looking sci-fi with a 40's noir aesthetic, covered in insanely purple dialogue and with a ruinous voice-over, think DARK CITY or THIRTEENTH FLOOR. Has lines like "The past is a bead on the necklace of time." Absolutely sucks and absolutely goes for it, I can't get mad.

  This is a strange one. It’s got an excellent cast, an interesting premise, an evocative dystopian world, and gorgeous production design — pretty much everything you’d want from a modern tech noir. So why is it so boring?

  It’s not so much an issue of pacing as it is one of attitude. Everyone just swaggers around looking beautiful and sad, with Hugh Jackman —  who’s supposed to be on this obsessive quest to find a woman he loved and lost — grumbling his voiceover without the slight bit of urgency or passion. Even the chases and fights have no energy or enthusiasm. It’s lifeless.

  I get that the movie is playing with memories and time, but they wound up with a tone where the world feels concrete but the plot is like a half-remembered dream. They just don’t work together. It should! The right pieces are all here. But somehow it doesn’t.

  A soggy near-future noir that fatally misunderstands the past, Lisa Joy’s “Reminiscence” is miles away from memorable, but that doesn’t mean it’s always so easy to forget. For one thing, it would be hard to completely shake any murder-mystery set in a half-submerged Miami so devastated by climate change that the streets of South Beach are flooded, the entire population has gone nocturnal because the daytime is too hot, and the rich live on a massive platform that’s walled off with its own private dam. If the lavish sets are furnished with too much CG, it’s still plenty neat to see trains skim across the surface of the ocean, or watch Hugh Jackman (as a rumpled private investigator of sorts)…

  A soulless, emotionless, sterilized wannabe copy of the masterpiece Strange Days, the movie Lisa Joy hopes you didn’t see and therefore don’t realize the outrageously blatant plagiarism and the lack of talent at display. Kathryn Bigelow is like a 5 star chef, Joy is like a drunk hobo running a taco cart. Strange Days lets you see God, Reminiscence is a fart in the wind.

  Jackman is usually a reliable actor but even he is bored with this insipid script and his dull character - he makes absolutely no effort here. Newton's Watts ​is clearly based on Bassett's character. And just like Mace she ends up being far more interesting than the one the protagonist is obsessed with, which Bigelow…

  awful but like the type of awful we don’t really get anymore. it’s big, it’s bold, it’s stupid, it swings for the fences, and it basically never bored me. feels like a weird sci fi box office bomb from the 90s or aughts and i kind of miss having those. it’s not good but i respect it a lot lol

  Lisa Joy's Reminiscence was kinda forgettable & reminiscent of better movies and despite not reaching the heights it was aiming for, it's never not watchable. A throwback hard-boiled sci-fi noir of the type studios don’t really allow themselves to make anymore and I'm glad it exists. I'll take anything from this genre. Love the "world-building", bringing in sunken city neo-Miami and the chemistry between Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson was undeniable scorching.

  How the fuck come nobody looks WET? This whole movie is about reckoning with the reality of climate change, takes place in a sunken Miami where daytime activities have ended due to intense heat, and everybody walks around in crisp jackets, dry shirts, without a bead of sweat to be found. This characters in this movie should look like they're in a 90s Grisham adaptation. Pit stains, dewy top lips, dripping forelocks. But they're always dry as hell. How come?

  I think it's because, as much as filmmakers want to 'tackle' the reality of climate change, they are fundamentally incapable of doing so. Because they're inside the wire. They know that climate change is already destroying millions of lives, but…
