How the fuck come nobody looks WET? This whole movie is about reckoning with the reality of climate change, takes place in a sunken Miami where daytime activities have ended due to intense heat, and everybody walks around in crisp jackets, dry shirts, without a bead of sweat to be found. This characters in this movie should look like they're in a 90s Grisham adaptation. Pit stains, dewy top lips, dripping forelocks. But they're always dry as hell. How come?
I think it's because, as much as filmmakers want to 'tackle' the reality of climate change, they are fundamentally incapable of doing so. Because they're inside the wire. They know that climate change is already destroying millions of lives, but those lives are elsewhere. The trauma of climate change is the trauma of having to know about it, not having to experience it. And the experience of climate change in the future is going to be constant, nonstop humidity clinging to every surface. That's an experience that the comfortable makers of a big budget film cannot imagine enduring. They can imagine the flooded ruins of former great cities, they can imagine the horror of mass death (observed from a reassuringly impotent distance) but they cannot imagine being personally effected by it. Being permanently damp. It's a horror too great to contemplate. A world where the protections of money and position (in the ARTS, of course! the physical comforts compounded by the moral comforts of not being implicated in the exercise of real power) can no longer assure the perpetuation of life as we know it now, is harder to imagine than the apocalypse. The apocalypse, surely, will have a VIP section.
