I have a weird feeling about Monty Python. I never got into “Monty Python's Flying Circus” and stopped watching after not finding the best moments particularly funny. I was also not that sold on “Life of Brian” even though it had good moments but this movie and “the Holy Grail” are just great (with “the Holy Grail” being the best and a 5/5 movie). For their last film, and the one featuring Chapman before his unfortunate death, the guys go back to the sketch format with one theme in common: life.
And as with any anthology or sketch show, some are better than others. Some are somewhere in between. For “Every Sperm is Sacred,” there’s a “The Crimson Permanent Assurance.” Some of the music is pretty good. The entire scene involving the dying leaves had me in stitches. The whole sex ed thing was bizarre and ran for way too long.
All in all, the cast is game and there is some really good stuff that got a few laughs out of me. But honestly, this leans heavier into the juvenile and randomness camp, which never was my favorite material by the gang.

I guess I've reached an age where this is my favorite Monty Python movie. So absurd and satirical that, minus some musical numbers and animation, it could easily be mistaken for one of Luis Buñuel's surreal attacks on bourgeois social norms.

I'm not particularly familiar with "Monty Python", but I watched "Life of Brian" the other day and loved it. So I decided to check out "The Meaning of Life" next. And just like every Terry Gilliam film I've watched (with exception of "12 monkeys") I couldn't get into it. I don't know what it is about Gilliam that doesn't resonate with me. I respect his technical acumen, but his films leave me cold and uninterested, and this film is no different.
The Meaning of Life is made up of 10-15 minute skits showcasing different areas of life. I personally dislike anthology films which wasn't a good start as I find there's almost always fluctuations in quality between different segments, and…

My favourite Python movie of the ones Michelle and I have watched today, mostly because the troupe is playing to their strength here by doing (short) scetches. That, coupled with stronger material, fun musical numbers and the sequence produced/directed by Gilliam, make this a more entertaining viewing experience for me.

The prologue opening “The Crimson Permanent Assurance” is a virtuoso piece of old man revolt against yuppie slavemasters, and this 17-minute segment was directed solely by Terry Gilliam, serving as a prelude to “Brazil” before the world becomes completely totalitarian. The revolters, now caricature pirates in the high seas of finance, are out to strip their competitors assets and put their policies in tattles byway of umbrella battles and paper spiking. They put an entire building on sails, with the one woman there to put a kettle on. A kettle on the stove for tea.
