Schrader confronts the generational gap and position of privilege Jake has. An old fashioned all-Christian/conservative American and his lack of understanding younger generations’ ideas of how to live a life. Never shy aways from the underbelly of the adult film scene or the hard lives of sex workers; but also calls out the cognitive dissonance that those indoctrinated into “ideal American life” reveal when confronted with anyone outside the mold.
