Very honoured to have watched this next to an IVF baby & very happy they invented it so I can see her everyday
-
Don’t tell me there was a time when religion had a problem with both abortion and IVF. So many things I never knew behind this story. This movie has Bill Nighy so of course, it’s charming. Thomasin McKenzie breathes life into this as the lead though.
-
shoutout to my aunt who gave scientific advice + worked with thomasin on this!!!! when ur watching this film and thinking “omg the number of cells they just said is so accurate given the amount of time since fertilisation” that’s because of living legend aunty ven!!!!!!
-
One of those satisfying, heartwarming true stories delivered in a slightly uninspired made-for-TV style that won't mesmerise, but will make you feel like there's some good in this world.
-
In fact, this movie was a Joy
Oh yes and... science fuck yeah!
-
Classic British film britishfilming. No complaints.
(I know this is so not the point of the movie, but it's absurd that in 2024 "science isn't entirely ready" still for endometriosis patients. It would be nice if the medical community started giving half a fuck about women's bodies and female pain.)

yes, its official: i love thomasin mckenzie.
what a beautiful story. i was a bit hesitant to watch this, thinking i wouldn't enjoy it, but i was proven wrong and ended up deeply moved by the end. it tackles difficult themes, inspired by the brave true story of three visionary professionals in their tireless fight to develop in vitro fertilization during the 1960s and 70s. what truly captivated me was the lightness and honesty with which the plot handles these topics, making us feel and empathize with the protagonists.
i love how the characters growth over the years is so evident, especially jeans. the dialogues and scenes are all deeply symbolic, thoughtful, and beautiful. i highly recommend it if you're into this kind of drama—its nearly two hours long but immensely satisfying. i knew nothing about this case before, and now im fascinated by the strength and determination behind it.

There is no happiness on this Earth more primal or profound than having a baby, and yet the expectation to do so has forever been wielded against women as a misery; it’s been a cross to bear for the people who get pregnant, a pariah-level sin for the people who choose not to, and — perhaps most unfairly of all — a curse from God for the people who can’t.
I trust you’re not hearing about this for the first time in a review of a pleasantly forgettable Netflix film starring Bill Nighy, but the fact remains that “society” has been content with that arrangement for much of the last few millennia, and science’s best efforts to amend it have…

A fascinating and deeply moving film about the pioneers of IVF and the struggles they went through developing the procedure. Thomasin McKenzie is great in the lead role, I loved her character's progression over the course of the movie. It started pretty slowly but once it found its footing I thought it was a really interesting story. Parts of the movie were definitely sad and bittersweet but overall it was a pretty feel good film that celebrates a true scientific breakthrough.

LFF #6
highlight was Bill Nighy coming out beforehand and saying Jean Purdy wasn’t recognised in this historical moment for 35+ years was because she didn’t have a penis.

Now who though Dr. Frankenstein is a good insult lol? If anything that's a huge flex being called that for a doctor. A nickname for a creature that make dead become undead? Yea I would brought that nickname into my Linkedin profile.

“this film is dedicated to those who made that joy possible.”
gonna be vulnerable for a second. as someone who, a little over two years ago, was diagnosed with infertility this hit on a deeply personal and meaningful level. my world was forever altered that day and the following months were some of the darkest of my lifetime. it’s stories like this that give me hope and makes apparent that while all may seem lost there’s always something to keep fighting for. grateful for the sacrifices that were made. grateful for the determination. grateful for the perseverance. grateful for the people who made hope possible and continue to do so to this day.
