"This is my island, and I assure you everything is fine." [Screaming man on fire in the background]
Very fun little family vacation trip gone wrong with just the right sense of dark humor and more blood than you expect. Nick Frost and Aisling Bea make a funny duo here but honestly every character brought they're own fun and laugh into the mix. The locals are creepy but the highlight was the pervert, he was genuinely creepy and I wanted a bit more. There's a twist in the third act that makes everything more fun and bloody (very similar twist to another movie that came out this year) but I saw it coming in advance due to foreshadowing. That said,…
That blood soaked third act was great but that random plot twist ?? all that buildup for that twist? Too over the top for me.
I’m struggling with giving this even one star, it was just trying too hard to be funny & I couldn’t wait for it to be over… but, I felt I had to watch it till the end in case it got good.
Some of the costumes were comical, from the play & also the spa-standard attire at the air b&b brought on some laughs. Other than that, this was just disappointing. Nick Frost is not a good writer imo. I do like him as an actor in the Pegg/Wright created horror-comedy films, though.
From the very beginning, Get Away rubs me the wrong way. It's a movie that thinks it's more clever than it is, and instead of including the audience into the joke, it wants to feel like the jokes are too smart for us. It also includes a twist that isn't nearly as clever as it wants to believe, and not one of these characters was even remotely interesting. The film could have used any amount of nuance and cut down on the smugness. Get Away, Get Away, Get Away now, in my Anthony Kiedis voice was all that was running through my brain and was maybe the only thing I enjoyed about this movie.
Get Away is a film that left me completely unimpressed. While it had a few surprising moments that briefly caught my attention, the overall experience was underwhelming. The movie felt aimless and lacked the cohesion needed to deliver a compelling narrative or memorable characters. Its attempts at suspense and thrills often fell flat, and the twists, though occasionally surprising, weren't enough to carry the movie. When the film does make a major change in tone, it ends up being so over-the-top and ridiculous that I lost almost all interest.
The execution felt amateurish at times, with weak dialogue and uneven pacing that made it difficult to stay engaged. It’s not the absolute worst movie I’ve seen—it had glimmers of potential—but…
A family gets away for a stay,
To an island for more than a day.
Although they may bicker,
To avoid "Wicker",
They may need to watch the whole play.
A horror/comedy vacation film that has a ‘Monty Python’ ‘Bobs Burgers’ approach within the first and second act…. Then….. then the third act happens !!!
Wow, this was surprising. Maybe not surprising because I went into this totally blind apart from knowing that Nick Frost was in it, but man, what a ride. Something that immediately worked for me from the get go was the humor. It almost had a ‘Bobs Burgers’ or maybe even a ‘Scary Movie’ style to its humor. Very dumb, adhd ridden comedy that worked soooo well for me but understandably might not for others. Within the first and second act, every scene involving dialogue was weighted with the anticipation of a punchline or something witty.…
Get Away isn’t perfect by any means but if you are growing restless with the current "Movie Junk" and are looking for something completely weirder, funnier and definitely massively bloodier, it should prove to be something right up your alley.
This movie is a fun and entertaining it really takes some big swings that help it separate itself from its peers IMO. In a decade where folk horror has become increasingly popular and more predictable at least to me, Get Away brings a brand new fresh approach and exciting take to the sub genre.
Christ, this is poor quality. I wonder if they deliberately gave away the 'twist' within the opening 5 minutes because they knew the writing was so dreadful, that this would be the only way to keep people remotely interested in staying for the pay off. If there even is one. A real waste of time.
