A horror/comedy vacation film that has a ‘Monty Python’ ‘Bobs Burgers’ approach within the first and second act…. Then….. then the third act happens !!!
Wow, this was surprising. Maybe not surprising because I went into this totally blind apart from knowing that Nick Frost was in it, but man, what a ride. Something that immediately worked for me from the get go was the humor. It almost had a ‘Bobs Burgers’ or maybe even a ‘Scary Movie’ style to its humor. Very dumb, adhd ridden comedy that worked soooo well for me but understandably might not for others. Within the first and second act, every scene involving dialogue was weighted with the anticipation of a punchline or something witty. I loved that. It’s a film that really doesn’t take itself seriously, moreso, it wants to have fun with its idea.
As mentioned, the first and second act feel like an awkward mesh of ‘English’ tourists visiting this Swedish island with residents that obviously don’t want them there. It’s lighthearted with its animosity AT FIRST, then we get to the third act….
I don’t want to spoil anything and it’s best you go in blind as I did. WOW is all I can say. It’s a twist that I think more will enjoy more than they’ll appreciate, but it goes absolutely bonkers. Not in the same ways as the earlier film The Substance, but it has that ‘wtf, I did not see that coming’ approach. It didn’t work for me immediately until I realized, hey, this is fun, this is a fun time. Let’s forget all logic and roll with it.
Overall, this was hilarious, short and bloody. The first hour you wouldn’t consider it to be a horror film until that last 20 minutes. Then, you absolutely would consider it a horror film. I’d absolutely recommend this if you want a dumb funny comedy that goes down so many different roads.
