  Action! - The Unlikely Rumble: Hill v Hyams

  Walter Hill continues to lose steam in this fight, where the tide is changing and the few who voted for Hyams' triumph are moving closer to the major prize.

  To be honest, the narrative of American maltreatment of indigenous as typified by Geronimo is interesting. There is also good drama and acting. Hill even manages to insert some of the director's trademark action. And it appears that many Native American groups praised the film at the time.

  "Geronimo: An American Legend" is a 1993 western directed by Walter Hill. As Hill is a director that has mastered outputs in the western and action genres, he wanted to put forth an effort that dives more into historical aspect of west. Originally interested in creating a film that centered around another infamous personality within western culture, Crazy Horse, Hill changed gears to focus upon Geronimo, feeling that Geronimo's story deserved to get a large-scale motion picture treatment. In the early 90's, with the application of Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves" (1990) winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards at the beginning of the decade, there felt to be a resurgence of this form of historical epic.   "In February 1909, Geronimo was thrown from his horse while riding home, and had to lie in the cold all night until a friend found him extremely ill. He died of pneumonia on February 17, 1909, as a prisoner of the United States at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. On his deathbed, he confessed to his nephew that he regretted his decision to surrender.   Alternative take on ULZANA'S RAID, where the inability of either side to stop fighting no matter how alike they may be is a source of tragedy, not nihilism. Hill's direction finds the balance between history and legend as sepia-toned photography bursts with flashes of muzzle fire and sudden dives into monochrome visions. Still, the film is most gripping in the quiet betrayals of trust between parties, portrayed as personal betrayals as much as the perpetuation of social injustices. Wes Studi gives the best performance of his I've seen, calling on his iconic looks and his immense, multifaceted talent. His Geronimo wants peace, but he will burn down the West before accepting it on the Union's terms.

  In 1882, notorious Apache leader Geronimo decides to lay his arms, surrender to the US Army, and settle with his people into a reservation. But the miserable life conditions and unprovoked aggression of the American military, force him to escape and once again take the warpath.

  There is no doubt that "Geronimo" has its heart in the right place and the filmmakers took great care to portray both the iconic Native American warrior and his white opponents in a fair and accurate way.   Great cast! Jason Patric, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Wes Studi as the titular star, and--whoa!--a very young Matt Damon!!!

  Other than the talented cast, this is a pretty paint-by-numbers piece of historic fiction. I use this phrase intentionally, as it goes beyond simply being dramatized history. As with The Warrior Queen, it's more a story inspired by a person, rather than being actually about that individual.

  That said, it treats the weighty subject matter with the gravity its due, and the story is compelling! It also helps that it's very well shot, and the land lends itself well to these types of scenes.

  I'd watched this film just the once before, back in 2012, and hadn't been that impressed by it. Given that it was a Walter Hill film, maybe my expectations were too high back then, but time however, and a more measured approach to what I was expecting made this a much more enjoyable experience this time around. A good historical story told well, even a fictionalized one like this one, can make up for a perceived lack of action or that "boring" tag this was labelled with, or maybe the sheer amount of Westerns I've seen lately has left me with a more generous attitude?

  One of Matt Damon’s earlier roles, I think he did a really great job. And so did Geronimo’s actor. The rest of the film didn’t really affect me as much. Having seen Dances with Wolves fairly recently, I couldn’t help making comparisons, especially with how much better the other film was.

  Impressively distinct from the Hollywood version of history but still feels stretched and folded to make more room for Jason Patric, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, etc, probably a necessary compromise to marshal the Hollywood resources necessary to make it in the first place.

  Indianer in US Western-Filmen wurden oft als nur die Bösen hingestellt, weil sie einfach nur böse sind. Der weiße Mann war selbstverständlich das Gute, was für die Werte der vereinigten Staaten von Amerika stand. Die bösen Indianer und die ach so tollen weißen Amerikaner. Und genau das war immer mein Problem mit diesen klassischen US Western, weshalb ich sie nie mochte. Denn die Wahrheit sah anders aus. Die Indianer waren nicht die Bösen. Der weiße Mann war es, denn er nimmt sich einfach was ihm nicht gehört. Hinterher wird das noch mit verdrehten Ansichten gerechtfertigt.
