Rewatch
If you put Kirsten Dunst in a movie, then odds are I'm gonna like it. I've been a fan of this movie since I first saw it in theaters back in 2001, and that's wholly because of Dunst and the music. The film definitely has an Urban Cowboy/Reality Bites vibe from the aspect that I'm not sure the people we are rooting to be together should be together, but it's the movies, so logic doesn't always matter. This is one love story that will always last to me, and that is a nod to David Gray. IYKYK.
SOME MILD SPOILERS
There’s just something so relatable and believable about the way Crazy/Beautiful is told, its cross-class/opposites attract high school narrative perfectly capturing that intoxicating, heady kind of early love as two very different people are passionately drawn together despite the odds, written with a thoughtfulness that never feels like it condescends to the complicated people being explored.
This was Jay Hernandez’s first major role, and he’s just so great here as the sensitive and dedicated Carlos, someone who (commuting from his district to the more affluent school he attends in order to get a better education) has to work twice as hard as his contemporaries,…

2001 Marathon - Film #79
”I’m 17.
I’m supposed to get outta control.”
Kirsten Dunst puts the crazy in beautiful as an uptown girl with daddy issues who finds herself with a downtown boy who takes life much more seriously than she does.
Dunst gives a strong performance that at least makes this bland Disney-fied teen romance watchable.
It should also be noted that no bras were used or harmed in the making of this motion picture.
”Ohmygod you are so obvious!”
I've got a soft spot for this one. I used to watch it a lot when I was younger. I could relate to some of the relationship dynamics between Nicole and Carlos. Kirsten Dunst as Nicole is heartbreaking with that quivering lip. She has a stand out scene where she questions if she's worth being loved. It gets me every time.
Also notable for Jay Hernandez's feature film debut as well as Taryn Manning. John Stockwell's filmmaking is very early 2000s, which depending on your tastes could be a good or bad thing. Kirsten Dunst, who's currently getting raves for "Civil War", makes the film worthwhile. If you're a fan of hers you should seek it out.
What a throwback!! The cool, edgy entry in the late 90s/ early 2000s teen romance genre. It surprisingly holds up quite well considering it’s 22 years old now. Reminds me of my sister as we always used to watch it having taped it off tv.
Well..you can call me silly, romantic or just a pussy but I loved it!
I know Dunst wasn't wear bra.
I know Dunst was with too greasy hair...
But..but...Dunst and Hernandez were so adorable as a couple.
I really liked their chemistry.
The soundtrack was so enjoyable too.
And yes, I want to believe that love can change everything in a person life for better <3!!
This movie kinda makes me uncomfortable because it's written by white men and directed by a white man. They tried but still, a film about a Mexican boy and white girl should have someone from those demographics in the creative decision positions. I'm kinda becoming annoyed with these.
However, Jay Hernandez is really handsome.
