Luca Guadagnino's projected fever dream of William Burough's "Queer" is an enigma of a film, which isn't surprising given the novel was considered unadaptable. I haven't read the novel, so I can't judge it it's a successful translation but it makes for a striking experience. This is Cinema with a capital C. I woke up thinking about it. The images have seared themselves into my psyche. Always a huge plus. As a narrative, there's a lot left to be desired,…

Wicked 2024
How could I dislike a film so much only to be wowed by its finale? It was like whiplash at the movies. After a promising start, our leading ladies are stuck at a school with some of the most hideous production design and art direction I've seen for a film of this kind. I was wishing for something beautiful and lived-in like the Harry Potter films. I also found the costume and hair design to be an eyesore as was…

Maria 2024
A biopic in which the most interesting aspect isn't Angeline Jolie as Maria Calls but Kodi Smit-McPhee playing a sedative. A Quaalude to be exact.
For a good hour, Pablo Larraín's final film in his trilogy of famous, sad, and obscenely wealthy women, seduced me with its beauty. Oh, Canada 2024
Being taken on a journey through the memories and recollections of a dying man’s life could certainly make for a compelling watch. Unfortunately Paul Schrader, one of my favorite directors, misses the mark here.
Richard Gere and Jocob Elordi, who are both good, play Leo Fife, a documentarian, who agrees to participate in a documentary about his life. Elordi plays the younger version while Gere is the older present day one. Shrader plays around a bit by abruptly having Gere…

Glass Onion 2022
Immediately dated (pandemic jokes), too clever by half and indulgently overlong, Rian Johnson's follow-up to the refreshingly clever and entertaining Knives Out, fails to live up to the hype made by festival audiences. Or it could just be me? Chances are I'm an outlier here but I couldn't wait for it to end.
While there are plenty of funny moments and the actors do well with what they're given, spending two plus hours with most of these characters is a…
