Gotta say I don't think this is a good movie by any means. The dialogue is stupid and the acting is pretty piss poor all round, even by legends like Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith. Having said that, Harryhausen's practical creature effects have a specific type of charm and wonder and there's some pretty great fantasy elements to the film; the whole sequence with Medusa, for example, is enough to at least partially redeem the flaws.
A throwback even at the time it was released, Desmond Davis's "Clash of the Titans" is a mythological tale of swords, sandals, and stop-motion spectacle. Eschewing "Star Wars" era special effects for Ray Harryhausen's hand-molded beasties, the film has a quaintness that makes it memorable. That quaintness, coupled with the film's epic story of infighting gods and the humans they love, makes for an entertaining delight that retains its power to thrill and charm decades after its release.

Clash of the Titans is another classic that I have surprisingly never seen, and I had a good time checking it out with my boys. I actually recall enjoying the 2010 remake, but I hated its sequel 'Wrath of the Titans'.
While Harryhausen's effects are certainly dated by today's standards, they are an element you simply have to get onboard with if are going to enjoy this movie, that has the feel of a story book brought to life. For New Year's Day, I wanted to watch something that brings back the innocence of my childhood, while also containing nudity, monsters, decapitations and blood-letting. No fear! it's rated PG (by 1981 standards)! My parents quite enjoyed it.
Honestly I'm not expecting this to be a HAPPY NEW YEAR. I've got a bad feeling for a number of reasons. Yet we'll always have movies to inspire and take us away. This childhood favorite succeeds in doing just that. The stop-motion effects from Ray Harryhausen always bring a smile to my face. Plus you get Laurence Olivier as Zeus.

Release the Kraken!
This one glides in on a wave of nostalgia. I remember watching it as a child and loving all of the gruesome creatures and heroic battles. Even today the old school charm of Harryhausen’s effects create a magical sense of fun.
Sure there’s Kraken sized issues with the filmmaking, but sometimes it’s best to just accept Medusa at face value and never question a cinematic gift from the gods.
BONUS POINTS for the perfectly cast Burgess Meredith who along with Bubo the mechanical owl, add just enough whimsy to keep the film afloat.

Loved this as a kid and always thought it was older than it was. Really don't know how anyone can watch this and not be in awe of Ray Harryhausen. Not sure if they're still there but in 2008 I saw a bunch of these models at the film museum in Berlin. If you haven't seen it, check it out currently on HBO Max. ⚔️⚔️⚔️
As someone who very much enjoys fantasy adventure films that feature Ray Harryhausen's delightful stop-motion animation work like his first two Sinbad movies and the excellent Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans is one that I didn't really like when I watched it years ago. found this on Netflix last night and showed it to the kids. predictably, they snickered at it and played on their phones and eventually fled the room altogether. they were utterly unreceptive to my running commentary, consisting as it did of pearls like “that’s Mickey from the ROCKY movies” and “Medusa’s coming up” and “these stop-motion special effects were pretty awesome back in the day” and “Judi frigging Bowker, huh?”
I brought this movie to my first big-time sleepover when I was, like, nine. I remember putting it on late at night in a house full of jazzed-up 4th graders and CLEARING THE GODDAMN ROOM. the only person left when it was over was my friend’s dad, who looked at me and indulgently chirped “well that sure was something!”
