Every year brings a great movie. Every decade a great movie musical!
New York, 1929, a war rages between two rival gangsters, Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Dan is in possession of a new and deadly weapon, the dreaded "splurge gun". As the custard pies fly, Bugsy Malone, an all-round nice guy, falls for Blousey Brown, a singer at Fat Sam's speakeasy. His designs on her are disrupted by the seductive songstress Tallulah who wants Bugsy for herself.

What is up with two films coming out in 1976 that sexualized thirteen year-old Jodie Foster? And how is her performance so amazing in both of them? She’s the only actor in this flick that transcends the limitations of her age and life experience (the other kids are all great though, don’t get me wrong).
To commemorate director Alan Parker’s passing last Friday I chose to watch his first feature film. This was a big one for my wife when she was a little kid. I only vaguely remember it being on HBO in the late seventies, but have no lasting memory of the movie itself. And...
I’m kind of surprised at all the low ratings. The songs are catchy and most of the actors are surprisingly really good, and the idea to make a 1920s gangster story made up of an all-child cast was genius. It has a high-budget stage play feel to it, but it’s full of charm, from the splurge guns to the fake moustaches and the pedal cars. John Cassisi as head mobster Fat Sam is particularly great, as well as a young Jodie Foster.
My main gripe was the songs being dubbed over by adult voices. It’s so obvious (especially because of the poorly-timed miming) that it’s like it was an intentional joke, but I don’t really understand the direction behind that.…
