When his boss is killed, Detroit cop Axel Foley finds evidence that the murderer had ties to a California amusement park called Wonder World. Returning to sunny Beverly Hills once more, Foley reunites with Detective Billy Rosewood to solve the case. According to John Landis, who re-teamed with Eddie Murphy in directing Beverly Hills Cop 3, most people on the picture knew the script was weak but he was convinced that with Murphy on form as displaced, maverick Detroit cop Axel Foley, they would make it funny by default, as he believed had been the case with the first, well loved movie a decade earlier. Axel Foley at a theme park🎡 sounds like the funnest premise ever so it's kind of a downer that this is the franchise’s worst movie🎢.
Taggart being missing is a huge disappointment☹️ & Axel didn’t really do his fast talking schtick🗣️ which is what made the first 2 movies special. It feels more like a generic action comedy and not part of the Bevely Hills Cop franchise🤷♀️.
But overall, I still liked it because the characters are still loveable💙. Any scene with Billy or Serge is absolute gold😂 and even when he's phoning it in Eddie Murphy is still one of the most charismatic guys around😎.

Just as narratively useless as Tony Scott's COP II but wildly understylized in comparison, this is so demonstrably a John Landis picture. Economically photographed, casual, packed with pointless cameos and vaudeville-level gags, steeped in nostalgic showbiz arcana, and completely self-aware. What it isn't is even remotely exciting. The aforementioned economy would have been completely alien to the action genre by 1994, and so this is the least visceral cop movie imaginable. What's more it almost completely lacks Axel Foley shtick, which is pretty much the only thing you're here to see. I'd be willing to bet that that this made it through the system at all only due to sheer laziness and contractual obligation on the part of all involved, but on the other hand that seems to negate its intrinsic weirdness.
This sequel’s storyline, with Axel running around an amusement park, was clearly designed to appeal to kids who’d watched the previous two R-rated Cops on cable TV. So of course, this kids-first sequel was also rated R. That’s right; it’s an adults-only kid-friendly sequel! They couldn’t even pander properly.
I was one of those kids, of course, and at the time I could never figure out why I liked this one so much less than the previous two movies. (I didn’t learn about the tortured development until later.) No matter what you know about how Beverly Hills Cop III was made, it is really dire.
