    gaspar noé: pain

the saddest thing when your body turns on you, and the saddest thing when Gaspar Noé rubs it in our face; showcasing the untimely outcome of our evident expiration date.
exceptional storytelling here, a very humanistic / touching side of Noé that we surely don’t get to see enough of, his use of split screen gives us the opportunity to see the small things that become habits…

    Speak No Evil

    ★★

    why are you doing this?
    because you let me.

Speak No Evil absolutely nails being in a deeply uncomfortable and distressing social setting—my anxiety had a field day with this one—but the most surprising thing about this is how humans are so quickly to be trusting, are we that desperate for social interaction?

I wanted to love this, but only ended up appreciating it for its relentlessness and feel-bad mood in the final act, knowing already that the director wanted us…

    Soft & Quiet

    ★★½

some of the most vile women put on film, especially when their actions speak louder than their hateful words. I’d love to know exactly what Beth de Araújo was hoping to achieve with this film, what kind of reception was she expecting from her audience? this is the clearcut definition of “misery porn” and truthfully it’s giving me flashbacks to the godawful taste Speak No Evil left me with, two movies that clearly want it’s audience to dig themselves their…

    The Pope's Exorcist

    ★★★

    I am a foul-mouthed Behemoth!

The Pope’s Exorcist is easily the most random release of the year and it’s nowhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be—pure exorcism camp that embraces its unholy goofiness. a solid foundation in sacrilegious tone makes up for the cringe dialogue that slithers off a possessed child’s sinful tongue. Everything else works to this little possession flicks benefit; Franco Nero plays the pope! the ending raises bloody hell! Russell Crowe casually rides a Vespa, twice!

let’s go to hell, 199 more times!

    “Jesus, what the fuck!”

Scott Derrickson went back to his Sinister roots with his looming trees, ghostly kids, and grain footage, offering us his best Stephen King adaptation without it being a Stephen King adaptation. Giving off strong IT vibes with all sorts of supernatural overtones and trauma afflicted kids, strictly heightened by numerous child performances— Madeleine McGraw, cast her in everything now!— that were both stellar and convincing. But… it’s Ethan Hawke for me, Ethan-motherfucking-Hawke; give the man a…
