Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice: As Dostoevsky would say, "Later, fucker!"

I watched the first movie for the first time last week, so I don’t really have any nostalgia attached to it, which might be the reason I was able to like this sequel better.
The story is nothing special, which it really wasn’t in the first movie either, but here we got more Beetlejuice and creativity, which just made it a more fun and enjoyable watch where I think time passed by quicker.
The flaws are still very prominent and the movie often felt messy and like it tried to balance a lot of ideas at once. This resulted in some parts feeling rushed and others coming off as unimportant and underdeveloped, which sadly resulted in some of the characters getting next to no screen time and the movie failing to come together that well.
The movie had a lot of style and creativity, which along with the nice practical effects and visuals made it a great and Tim Burtonish watch, but it jumped a bit between styles, especially early on, which could feel a bit off and very random. I was also surprised by the amount of blood and gore, which really wasn’t anything extreme, but it was still more than I had expected.
The comedy was a little hit or miss, but it overall had some nice jokes and fun new ideas in new settings, while still doing a good job referencing the first movie without having it feel forced.
The cast did a good job and Michael Keaton was still just as fantastic as Beetlejuice. He wasn’t exactly politically correct, but he felt more clean than in the first movie, though I still think he was very true to the character and fit it perfectly. The rest of the main cast don’t have any big moments and their roles aren’t the most challenging, but they are great fun nonetheless and the returning cast members are fun to see again all those years later. Willem Dafoe was also great fun in his small role, but he wasn’t used enough and all the scenes with his character was just filler. He wasn’t nearly as unnecessary and underutilized as the Delores character played by Monica Bellucci though, since she had an introduction and backstory that made her seem very important, but then we don’t really see or feel her presence much afterwards, which was a big mistake that also made the ending feel weird.
