Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

I always knew it was going to be hard to reignite that spark from the original’s lightning in a bottle so I went into this with incredibly low expectations! And I’d say they were exceeded but not to the extent I was hoping for.

The movie is juggling like four different plot lines at any given time so some were bound to be more fleshed out than others. The whole Monica Belluci subplot served ZERO purpose and felt like she was just stuck in there for the millennial dads to ogle at. I thought the main storyline between Astrid and Lydia was nice but doesn’t reinvent the wheel with anything. In my opinion the most fun was Delia’s antics. I could watch Catherine O’Hara in anything though. She is the one who won the most laughs from me! (Duh!) There is a musical number that I have absolutely ZERO time for though and it lost a half a star for that bs.

I like that they kept Beetlejuice in a smaller capacity like in the first film and Michael Keaton is just at the top of his most Beetlejuice game. You could tell he was having so much and honestly that goes for everyone. Winona Ryder is definitely acting! But I can’t help but find her (mostly) endearing. Jenna Ortega is a welcomed addition here! This casting feels like a no brainer! She’s great! Detested Justin Theroux and think he and his whole plot should’ve been thrown out!

I loved how it was able to keep the original film’s color scheme in the afterlife. Loved the practical effects and the production design and the cinematography. It does look a bit flat but so does everything else nowadays unfortunately. This is a return to form for Tim Burton and I’m happy to see it! I hope does more. I just don’t want another Beetlejuice sequel, sawry.

Overall, I was hoping to love this more but I had fun with most of what we were given! I do think a bad audience kind of dumbed this down for me so I’m hoping it’s better upon a second viewing! It’ll be a nice addition to the Halloween movie lineup though!
