Oppenheimer is the real deal. Nolan’s greatest achievement. He ventures to places we’ve never seen from him before. With Inception, Nolan took a very literal and rigid approach to dreams. Here with a courtroom procedural biopic, he sprinkles in elements of horror and surrealism. If this marks a shift in Nolan’s style, I’m all for it. I really do feel like he has evolved and matured as a filmmaker with this one. It reminded me of Blonde (now hear me out) in its structure; a collage of moments from a person’s life, bouncing from timeline to timeline, and edited together at such a brisk pace rather than the traditional, linear structure of most biopics. It’s an intense, heart-pounding, and haunting experience of impending doom that builds and builds and builds until it erupts into mental anguish and moral dilemmas of scientific progress. At what point does progress go too far and become more destructive than beneficial? Maybe it’s recency bias - though I doubt it - but I think that Cillian Murphy’s performance is an all-timer. That guy knows how to stare intensely, and his eyes in 70mm are a sight to behold.
