Kane Bumpers’s review published on Letterboxd:
Oppenheimer is a good movie, surprise surprise. The performances by Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are pretty great. From a technical standpoint, most things are pretty strong. The entire last hour-hour and a half is pretty miraculous in terms of editing, story, acting, and directing. Most of my problems were found in the first hour and twenty minutes. It was very well paced, but kinda to the detriment of the film because they were cutting out so much space in the character interactions; it felt awkward, like it wasn't real human beings talking to each other, and it didn't help that much of the dialogue was pretty standard or even silly. That being said, I warmed up to the writing as it went along, but I still didn't find it to be too special. The score was really nice, but it unfortunately made the already montage-y first hour feel even more like a music video because it was playing over such long durations of the runtime. I didn't have many issues with the voice recordings/mixing after the first 30 minutes, but neither me nor the two guys I came with could tell what the last line in the film was. Matthew looked it up and it made sense, but I feel like it maybe could have been easier to decipher one of the most important moments of the film. Anyway, I know I talked a lot about my issues here, but this is definitely an engaging experience that will leave you thinking about the repercussions of a big development in history.
