    American Pie

    ★★★★

Like most teen sex comedies, American Pie has its fair share of moments that have not aged well. But if you can get past them, it remains a funny and often truthful look at teenage life. It also deserves kudos for giving (most of) the female characters a decent story, and it has genuine heart, which makes it stand out from similar films. There’s a lot of talent in the cast too. To this day, it amazes me that Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch) didn’t go onto bigger things.

  • Cruising

    Cruising

    ★★★½

Cruising is an odd film. It’s both underrated and flawed. Star Al Pacino and writer / director William Friedkin didn’t get along and were apparently rarely on the same page, and perhaps that explains the end result. Pacino is very good, but I feel like his character’s personal struggles aren’t fleshed out enough by Friedkin.  I like the atmosphere; the film feels dangerous, with Pacino constantly under threat. Cruising may not be one of the very  best films of its director or leading man, but it’s definitely better than its reputation.

    The Thing

    ★★★★½

Halloween will always be my favourite Carpenter movie but I think The Thing is his best work as a director. The paranoia, and the suspense that stems from it, is handled perfectly and when you mix in a great cast of character actors, a terrific Ennio Morricone score, and the disgusting Rob Bottin practical effects, you have one hell of a fun film.

    Alien: Romulus

    ★★★★

Seventh entry in the Alien series is set between the original film and the first sequel, and
returns to its horror roots quite satisfyingly. It plays like a bit of a mishmash of all the earlier entries, borrowing and expanding ideas, which surprisingly worked for me (apart from one dialogue throwback that made me cringe), but where Fede Alvarez and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues excel are in the set-pieces. The film makes the best use of the facehuggers since Aliens…
