Paint Drying

Evening all! A few months ago, my friend and I kick started our Sci-Fi Film Challenge which was done with the goal of comprising a definitive Top 10. I’ve reached the end of the challenge and one of the things I really like is learning more about my likes and dislikes. So here’s what I learned.

Themes: There are certain topics that automatically garner my interest. Exploitation, discrimination and classism are subjects that I get heavily invested in. Moon, District 9, Gattaca, A.I., Snowpiercer. These are all films that I love and I can find some commonality amongst them.
To counter that, I’m not as big of a fan of existentialism. While I don’t dislike them (I gave 2 of the following films 4 stars), films like Contact, Arrival and Annihilation will never hit the top of my list.

Subgenres: 100% I am not big on space. This excludes thrillers and fantasy films. If there’s a ship and a ton of galaxy shots, the film will have to work overtime to win me over.

The Tarkovsky/Kubrick Dance Off: Well I’ve chosen a side in this feud and I’m giving it to Tarkovsky. I very likely wouldn’t watch Solaris or Stalker again but I gave both a 3.5 because both were so intriguing. For the length they held my attention.

The Good: Predestination! I’d seen it before and liked it but it clicked on this watch. I loved it so much, I watched it twice and it made my Top 10.

The Bad: I thought Twelve Monkeys and Strange Days were shoo-ins. They’re favorites since my teens. I still love both but I realized there are at least 10 other sci-fi films I like better.

The Ugly: It was borderline painful not to include Gattaca in my Top 10. It’s a film I really connect with but it’s solely for its themes. While it sparked a lifelong fascination with genetics, I don’t feel as much as I’d like for the characters. The most I feel is sympathy for Jude Law’s character and he’s not even the lead so that’s a detractor. I still love you Gattaca. Honorable mention. 😘

Well, thank you for following along. Appreciate the comments and reads.
