“You don’t get to commit a sin and then make us all feel sorry when there are consequences.”
Wholly enthralling and absorbing for the duration of its runtime. It ultimately feels like a series of montages strung together, which could be exhausting to watch as goalposts keep shifting, but the screenplay is so solid that huge payoff moments strung to seemingly inconsequential phrases hit like, if you’ll excuse the expression, a bomb.
Time will tell if this is my favourite Nolan, but my initial reaction is that I could watch it again immediately. The performances are all perfect. Cillian Murphy of course of course, but Emily Blunt as an acerbic woman looking for a fight and Matt Damon playing essentially his 30 Rock character are definitely my cup of tea (the latter may possibly be influenced by just seeing Damon in a uniform). RDJ and Ehrenreich are so good together—numerous scenes would end only for me to feel disappointed I wouldn’t get to see these characters continue to interact.
A complex film about a complex guy. I saw someone call this “the TÀR of 2023” and while I love both of these movies I have no idea what that could mean. If they meant that they’re both 3 hours, my favourites of their respective years, and they’re about fascinating people who, deep down, are just the worst, then to that person I say: you’re right.
