While The Wild Robot isn’t necessarily groundbreaking in terms of animation or storytelling, the execution is absolutely phenomenal. It explores wonderful themes of motherhood—both the good and the bad—in a way that doesn’t feel oversaturated or tamed.
The movie looks good. Again, it’s not anything shocking, but the colors and world design all work beautifully. The pacing was probably a major contributing factor to how smooth the experience of the film is. It maintains a good steadiness while also making smart decisions on when to go dark, when to go action, and so forth.
Performances by Pedro Pascal and Lupita Nyong’o were dynamic and memorable, which is great for the film’s longevity. I kept trying to listen for Pedro, and it was much harder than you’d think. It’s a well-disguised performance that feels genuine—a welcome surprise considering how most big stars sound too noticeable or don’t try at all.
Overall, it’s really fun! Is it the best animated film ever, as the 98% on RT might suggest? Eh, well, no—but that’s an unfair bar, so I wouldn’t go in with those expectations. But I highly suggest bringing along a little sibling, cousin, and especially your mom and enjoying the show nonetheless.
