LOST is my all-time favourite TV show, so there was no chance I was going to be objective about this, but I absolutely loved it. A really great documentary about the show in the year of its 20th anniversary, exploring the origins & ending of the show, parts of the journey it took to get there, and its impact & legacy. 

There are a lot of talking heads in this—most of them well-known people, including cast & crew of the show, some famous fans, cultural writers that covered the show as it aired. Then there’s also the regular fans, including podcasters, charity founders, and more. At first I was worried that they wouldn’t fit in, seemingly just there to gush. But then the doco really started to explore the impact the show had on fans as it aired, and the impact the fans had on the show in return, and it became much more impactful. It covered their experience watching, and then the impact it had on their lives afterwards, from being welcomed into communities, to surviving cancer, to stopping them from committing suicide. Not gonna lie, I teared up watching these people talk about how much a thing I love has affected them. 

The cast were also great, as they seemed to really understand just how special the story they told is to people. They have fond memories of making the show, and a real love for the people who supported them. It was very special to watch them reminisce, and a semi-reenactment of a pivotal phone call from the show also got me misty-eyed.

One very impressive thing about this being made in 2024 is that we have new information about the making of the show, and the documentary doesn’t shy away from that. The accusations of a toxic writers’ room are addressed head-on by fans & crew alike, before culminating in an apology from the showrunners that certainly seems to come from a place of remorse. It’s really well-handled, and stops the whole thing from feeling like they’re wearing kid gloves.

It’s hard to express exactly how this show hit me. It was the first adult drama that I followed from beginning to end, watching every Thursday (except for maybe three episodes that I missed when they aired and had to read summaries of, until the entire season came out on DVD)(and that one week the London bombings happened and the live news coverage pushed the episode back a week). Waiting the year between each season was torture, and sometimes even the week in between episodes was tough. I never delved into spoilers online, mostly because Australia was delayed and I just wanted to watch the episodes, but I remember reading theories and having a lot of fun. The different characters were so cool, and the format was fascinating, and the music is absolute bananas good (that is addressed in the doco, though I wish it could’ve been more). Just a very special show for me. 

My final takeaways:
1. It’s very funny to watch most of the cast struggle to remember the numbers.
And 2. Daaayyummm, a lot of this cast have aged wellll. Looking at you Daniel Dae Kim.
