I tried watching Mikey and Nicky so many times (4 at least) and it never really clicked until recently. It might be because I’d finally seen Cassavetes in a few other roles beforehand, incl Machine Gun McCain a Rosemary’s baby, helping me appreciate what makes him such a remarkable performer, beyond his direction. The Safdie Brothers’ and Patton Oswalt’s recommendations really sealed the deal for me, and now i can definitely spot its influence in Uncut Gems, Good Time, and…

I went into Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu with zero expectations. I really disliked The Northman (to me it’s vastly overrated) and I also can’t appreciate his work on The Lighthouse that felt almost unbearable. I’m indescribably pissed off with this pile of shit a deux. Pissed off, disappointed and saddened. I loved the original to the tears, and the fact that Philips couldn’t even hold it up to it is just beyond my understanding

    ★★★★½

Raw, cruel-to-characters and uncompromising. Don’t really understand how this movie got made at all with all its anti-capitalist pathos, feelings and plot. Performance of a lifetime from John Heard, whom I never even took seriously ever before. The plot somewhat might have influenced The Big Lebowski for sure: too many similarities and characters, let alone Jeff Bridges himself. Will probably look closer to Ivan Passer filmography. Heard of him only as a cinematographer, never cared of anything else he’s done…
