I’m indescribably pissed off with this pile of shit a deux. Pissed off, disappointed and saddened. I loved the original to the tears, and the fact that Philips couldn’t even hold it up to it is just beyond my understanding

Cutter's Way 1981
Raw, cruel-to-characters and uncompromising. Don’t really understand how this movie got made at all with all its anti-capitalist pathos, feelings and plot. Performance of a lifetime from John Heard, whom I never even took seriously ever before. The plot somewhat might have influenced The Big Lebowski for sure: too many similarities and characters, let alone Jeff Bridges himself. Will probably look closer to Ivan Passer filmography. Heard of him only as a cinematographer, never cared of anything else he’s done…

Cuckoo 2024
Strong disagreement with the stylistic bedlam and with Dan Stevens casting for the antagonist casting, as it turns out, can kill every single positive vibe about the movie with an extraordinary actress and a fair premise. Could forgive the first, but Dan’s exaggerated performance made it impossible. P.S. I’d better have rewatched SHOUT by Skolimowski instead (and I will - sooner than I thought I would)

The Substance 2024
a damn rollercoaster ride worth every minute of waiting
both, Demi and Margaret, are so good that I was surprised to care for both characters at some point
the only regret is that Quaid’s character didn’t suffer much at the end - I won’t mind watching his character dismembered, decapitated or slashed and cut to the shreds

Abigail 2024
A nice flick nicely failing every promise it makes to you. Could be a bigger. But, I guess, the steroids (as mentioned by the authors) hit hard. The kid is phenomenal, though. What a performance. Felt pity for Dan Stevens - he’s got himself another average character and average performance after Cuckoo. Can’t also let another thought go away - why on Earth the makers didn’t give Drew Goddard a credit for the “monster ballerina”? At least they’d get some respect from guys like me

Manila in the Claws of Light 1975
Stumbled upon this feature thanks to Sean Baker’s review, whose mention of Taxi Driver’s ending as a possible inspiration pulled me right in. The film turned out to be standing completely on its own - astounding in its raw power, devastating in its depiction of life in the Philippines, and a masterclass in direction by Lino Brocka.
It’s unflinching, yes, but also never exploitative. Brocka captures the grit and despair of Manila’s streets without losing sight of the humanity within…

Last Year at Marienbad 1961
Damn, what a beautiful incomprehensible mindfucking movie that hardly ever succeeds to mindfuck you, leaving just the void, self-doubt and urge to watch sth more comprehensible even by the sake of your own intelligence.

Lifeforce 1985
Surprisingly good first act with truly interesting visuals, a messy 2nd and a havoc instead of a third that could be forgiven by everything on the Churchill, flashbacks included. Still I’m somehow happy that I finally watched it on Criterion channel that clearly justifies the screenings of movies like this for me - ones that you heard, but never approached because of the reviews. Tobe Hooper is a true mystery man to me. Once and again after TCM he fucked up so many opportunities that other directors would grasp fully with gratitude, from Salem’s lot to Poltergeist, famously finished by Spielberg, and now this. Duh

Never Let Go 2024
Read the script a year ago. Hard to understand what’s on the mind of the guy who shot Haute Tension and Mirrors and even Crawl when he takes such a lame and generic text to shoot - I’ll probably never watch it, life is too short

The Holdovers 2023
One of the best movies of 2023 and probably of 2000s. Would watch it again with my daughters again, I hope

Talk to Me 2022
I thought nothing could scare me shitless after It Follows and Hereditary. But this gem convinced that I have to try harder in proving myself. Really loved the combo of grief drama, twisted ghost movie and a mumblegore. Wonder if the multi-seasoned TV project of the brothers is also that good as their cinematic debut. Will revisit many times as soon as I recover from the coincidence with meeting my belated Mom in a vivid dream same night. It’s only a movie, they said, no shit.

The Boys in the Band 1970
I really fell in love with this picture in 1 hour and 20 min. Got hypnotised by the rain sequence in the middle. The last 20 min kept me at the end of the sofa. Who would have thought
