The Substance

The Substance

What’s the price to stay young and beautiful? Your career? Your life?

These are the questions that Coralie Fargeat will propose in her newest movie. ''The Substance'' is categorically one of the most ******* science fiction movies I've ever watched. Coralie worked to her best where she wrote the screenplay, produced, edited and directed practically alone. Her direction referred me to other works peculiar to the bizarre such as those of Yorgos Lanthimos, Sam Raimi and John Carpenter and only those who will watch this exclusive production of Mubi will agree with me. Fargeat worked with her cameras in several pov, which contributed to a more dynamic and different film. The screenplay having been awarded for originality in Cannes is what best defines this film. In "The Substance", the protagonist Elizabeth, played by Demi Moore, who after years of fame in Hollywood will lose her career for the most reductive and misogynistic reason for a woman: her age. When age reflects on your beauty and you can lose everything as far as you go to save your future? So with the use of an unknown drug from the black market, Elizabeth sees another chance to be able to shine again. A dramatic movie, a "body horror" to the extreme and fucking brilliant.

I don't know if everyone who has watched the movie had the same idea as mine, which crossed my mind all the time. What I watched was a new version of ''Snow White'' where Demi Moore acts bravely, without any shame to show her body, her nudity, in front of the mirror without even saying a word, but you can read in her eyes ''mirror, my mirror''. So let's see the development of the "Evil Queen" realizing her biggest dream: to be beautiful again. Through a genetic mutation, her own version of Snow White or Sue will be born of herself.

When you have ''Poor Things'' and "Kind of Kindness" on your resume for two excellent performances then in "The Substance", Margaret Qualley will take it out of the letter. Playing the new version of Elizabeth, Margaret will give life to Sue, a young woman with a beauty, charisma and the body of every woman's dreams. The snow-white princess we imagined she would be was more like a red nightmare like death, without a doubt, was ONE of the biggest plot twists in the movie. Sue was a very important character for the plot because she will be the one who transforms the evil queen into her last version: the witch.

One of the scenes that scared me the most completely. It was at that moment that I said with all the words: "Demi Moore you’re an Artist". We have to congratulate the special effects team and characterization they created a surreal "new" character. I was completely shocked. After this moment, the movie gets darker and the horror spreads every second until the final minutes. Another scene that I was paralyzed was when the two were finally face to face, guys, that was cinema. Science fiction won't stop, it just increases and we'll have more moments of horror. To a bigger mystery in the movie, a third character that we only hear his voice and then I resume my idea, would he be the magical being inside the mirror of the evil queen? because “the substance” is green like the apple’s poison. One of the scenarios that made me most uncomfortable was that damn bathroom. Guys, what an ugly bathroom, how can someone stay in there and not have an anxiety crisis or claustrophobia? The final moments of the film were also surprising.

In conclusion, I wanted to be able to say more about the moments of the movie, but I have to avoid giving too many details, I had so much to talk about, but what I really want here is to contribute so that those who read my review can watch this "horror movie" and have the same intense experience I had. I advise you not to eat anything during the movie screening, because I think food may end up wanting to go out, not for an unlikely place, like a navel.
