A little confused about the Monica Belluci side plot but apart from that, this is a fantastic sequel. It has the perfect amount of homage material while managing to have storylines and conflicts that would actually make sense. It’s awesome to see that someone actually took the time to cross the i’s and dot the t’s on this and not just string together a bloated mess of references!
There’s also a very notable focus on character development for the three leads. For those who’ve seen the first Beetlejuice, there’s an obvious departure from Delia’s and Lydia’s original personalities but the characters are inhabited so well that it definitely reads like there’s been two decades of character development that turned a self-possessed goth girl into a stuttering anxious wallflower (Lydia), and a self-involved, oblivious hack into a self-aware, endearing hack (Delia).
Ortega does pull in a good performance, of course, and the other characters are equally captivating, but it’s O’Hara/Ryder’s chemistry and history that really grounds the piece. Definitely a tall order because of their eccentric personalities which makes the execution even more special.
