As with Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero: Metallicam and Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, content in Guitar Hero: Van Halen including Van Halen rockers and special outfits & accessories for other rockers. Like in the previous titles, players earns Cash by playing songs in either Career or Quickplay and the player can earn extra cash by performing well and completing song tasks. Cash can then be used to buy equipment for characters and their custom rockers.

Content in Career can be unlocked by the total best star count of each song on any Career difficulty. A total of 235 stars can be earned in any instrumental Career but only 200 stars are needed to complete all unlockables for the instrumental Career. Getting 5 gold stars (100% notes hit) on a song still counts at 5 stars.

Rock Ranks[]
As with Guitar Hero World Tour and its expansive titles (Guitar Hero: Metallica and Guitar Hero: Smash Hits), the Rock Rank system is also available in Guitar Hero: Van Halen. A player's Rock Rank increases after earning a certain number of total cash earned from playing songs (either in Career or Quickplay), which acts as "experience points". Ranking up doesn't unlock any new content though. The highest rank a player can earn in Guitar Hero: Van Halen is Rank 30.
