Guitar Hero: Smash Hits (known as Guitar Hero Greatest Hits in the European and Australian releases) contain 48 licensed songs in the game that are master recordings of songs previously featured in the first five published games of the Guitar Hero series:
- Guitar Hero (14 songs)
- Guitar Hero II (18 songs + "The Trooper" from Xbox 360)
- Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (6 songs)
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (8 songs)
- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ("Back in the Saddle")
Like with Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero: Metallica, songs in Guitar Hero: Smash Hits in either the Career's single player or Band play are arranged in tiers roughly in order of difficulty for the particular instrument, with different orders for each of the five Career paths. However, all songs are playable in Quickplay mode without completing any Career goals.[1] Twenty-one of the songs were exportable to both Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero for a small fee, with music licensing limiting which songs could be exported.[2][3] The songs included in the game are as follows.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
There are also 21 premade custom songs on disc for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, 20 composed by Isaac Sprintis and 1 composed by Beenox's music team, for a total of 69 playable songs on next generation consoles. Although the game supports user-created songs through the GHTunes service on next generation home consoles, other existing downloadable content does not work with Guitar Hero: Smash Hits.[4] The PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, however, does not feature the Music Studio feature nor these additional songs.
