Guitar Hero was the third video game in the Guitar Hero series to receive unofficial achievements support for the RetroAchievements achievement service on December 7, 2022 as well as a subset of achievements for full combos on Expert difficulty.[1] These achievements can be unlocked by logging into RetroAchievements in a PlayStation 2 emulator that supports the RetroAchievements service.
Unofficial PlayStation 2 achievements of Guitar Hero (NTSC version supported for now) can be unlocked by signing into RetroAchievements in any of these following software:
- PCSX2 Qt v1.7.3350 or newer (latest version recommended)
- EtherealSX2[2] (W.I.P.)
- AetherSX2 13190-v1.4-2928 or newer including the NetherSX2 patch (softcore mode only as of April 2025)[2][note 1]
- XBSX2.0 on Xbox One (softcore mode only as of April 2025)[2][note 1]
While the latest version of PCSX2 (nightly builds included) is officially supported in RetroAchievements in both hardcore and softcore modes (as well as EtherealSX2 when its development is released), outdated emulators support hardcore mode for a limited amount of time while other emulators that "unofficially" supports RetroAchievements (emulators that are not listed on RetroAchievement's download section)[note 1] only support softcore mode.[2] Softcore mode has no restrictions while emulation features such as rewind, loading save states, and cheats are disabled in hardcore mode but fast-forwarding and creating save states are still allowed, but both modes are scored separately and "mastery" award is only unlocked when completing every achievement in hardcore mode.[3]
Guitar input is supported in PCSX2 Qt since v1.7.4792 released on July 24, 2023. AetherSX2 and NetherSX2, however, does not support guitar input but mobile gamers can make use with a touchscreen in gamepad mode, or, to use a guitar controller in AetherSX2/NetherSX2, see Controllers and controller compatibility § Gamepads and other controllers.
RetroAchievements[]
