Samsung confirms Tizen-based mobes to debut this year

james 68

not quite

"The first hints that Samsung was looking to Tizen as a possible replacement for Android came in June 2012, when the mobile maker sunk $500,000 into the Linux Foundation, which oversees Tizen development."

not so much, try googling LiMo - you know... what Tizen was called before it had a name change, or simply look at the Tizen Wikipedia page. hell just check your own archive http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/26/limo_founded/ from 2007 no less

Education Secretary Gove: Tim Berners-Lee 'created the INTERNET'

james 68

heh

gotta admit though. its a lot closer to the truth than what american schoolchildren are taught about how al gore invented the internet using a series of magical mystery tubes.

That horrendous iPhone empurplement - you're holding it wrong

james 68

Re: Macturbate / mac-tur-bayt (verb)

and i thank you sir

for proving my point so well ;-)

james 68

Macturbate / mac-tur-bayt (verb)

v. to pleasure oneself through the use of an Apple product.

Once Mike gets the new iPhone he's going to macturbate for a week straight.

If whilst macturbating to your new iDevice you do not get irrationally excited and pompous, you are holding it wrong.

(should be added to the register lexicon imho)

iPhone 5 Lightning cables sticking in USB ports

james 68

duh

its obvious innit?

apple has altered the male usb connector 'just enough' to claim that its a different and 'new' product

now they will patent their 'new' usb end using their favorite sympathetic court of law

stand by to see them suing the ass off of every single manufacturer out their next year for making usb ends too similar to apples "original and innovative" proprietary design.

its what theyve done with everything else and its made them a fortune, why stop now?

Re: Super fast planetary formation - why?

careful mate...

your comment is way too sensible, the holier than thous will be salivating at the thought of jumping all over it just to feed their egos

james 68

is it just me or do some "scientists" seem to completely dismiss obvious and simple ideas for the most far fetched ones?

dust around stars disappears! must be super duper fast planet formation!!!

or maybe just a migratory planet(oid)s orbit caused it to drift through the solar plane which contained the dust causing a large portion of it to be scooped up to the planet(oid)s surface due to gravity, something we can infer from accumulated evidence happened many times in our own solar system setting a known precident.

NO!! MUST!! BE!! SUPERFAST!! PLANET!! FORMATION!! MUST!! HAVE!! CRAZY!! THEORY!! TO!! GET!! MORE!! FUNDING!!

Metallic Glass iPhone 5 to battle pottery Samsung Galaxy S3

james 68

er...

isnt this the exact same rumour that was flying around for the last 2 versions of iphone?

i was interested in it before from a materials standpoint only to discover that the phone was standard kit and only the lil pokey thing was liquid metal - next will be the rumour that the entire samsung galaxy s3 will be entirely made of gorrilla glass, oh wait they said that before too

Re: scientists need to go back to school

i gather the 'Fail' icon was for failing to see the point, your link is to an entirely different event, which i might add was never misrepresented as being a natural explosion.

fail indeed

james 68

scientists need to go back to school

large marine creatures do in fact have a tendency to "explode" re: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3437455.stm

land mammals have a more porous skin allowing gasses to seep out and not build pressure - marine creatures on the other hand have a much thicker hide with a lot less porosity allowing pressure to build until the creature splits or even explodes.

Crazy pot smokers get high on wireless power

james 68

meh

ill be happy when they make a mousemat that charges my wireless mouse as i use it - those buggers eat batteries

other than that im really not bothered until they can keep devices charged WHEREVER you are (a la teslas wireless energy ideas) or better yet keep electric bikes and cars running nationwide without the need for enormous battery packs and 13 hour stop offs to recharge every 100 or so miles.

that would be a proper technological advancement - but remember the priorities, wireless mouse = first pls.

9/11: The day we lost our privacy and power

james 68

heh

im still waiting for someone in power to ask the question - why arent all the highlevel americans (including white house politicians) who supported, often openly, the IRA being shipped to gitmo? people who had limited associations with organisations classed as 'fringe' are being targeted by 3 letter organisations so why not those in power who support(ed) actual terrorism?

of course the answer is that it benefited the US gov at the time by destabilising the UK (thanks both bush bastards, bang up job ya did there, hope you both burn in hell tormented by all those who died) but how is anyone supposed to take anything the amercians say seriously when such hypocrisy is so plainly open to view?

i pray for knight-ridder to appear in court when apples lawyers are in full flow and introduce themselves with a polite "excuse me, heres a summons you arrogant tossers."

or perhaps i should just email a copy of that story to the judge concerned and laugh as apple sinks in flames.

Videogames caused riots says plod

james 68
FAIL

not quite

i think youll find that there is NO evidence that duggan fired a gun - NONE

the evidence the police presented in their defence has crumbled around their own ears already - the bullet found in the police radio? came from a police issue mp5, as usual theyre covering their own asses

the modified pistol found at the scene shows NO signs of having been fired and there are huge inconsistancies as to where it came from or that duggan was even in possession of it

james 68
Big Brother

hmm

i can see their point...

i mean its obvious computergames are the cause, police killing an innocent and then beating the shit out of a minor are both much less likely to be flashpoints for violence than a computergame.

besides its not like the police would want to move blame away from their own actions is it?

EMC's all-flash benediction: Turbulence ahead

james 68

um...yay?

personally i think this is great news, perhaps now that SSD's will eb made and used in much larger amount the prices will finally start falling making them more accessable to the average consumer.

its only ever when big business makes moves like these that prices ever drop for the mainstream.

Multimillionaire's private space ship 'can land on Mars'

james 68

hmm

doesnt el-reg have a vehicle capable of landing on other planets?

and its made from paper to boot (you lot missed out on publicity/advertising there, foolish)

all it needs is a means of getting there

stick a paper plane on a rocket - fire it at mars and voila, hell you can do it with a bouncy ball

just cause something 'can' land somewhere doesnt necessarily mean its a good idea or serves any real purpose beyond publicity

Richard Branson to prowl oceans' hadal depths in flying sub

james 68

@DavCrav

He's not so much moving tech or engineering forwards as reusing 20 year old tech - the original submersible was designed and made in the early 90's, not that you'd find that out from the press blurb on the whole matter and the only real upgrade is the re-enforced pressure hull added in 2005 - just check it out under its original project name of 'deep flight'

Russia has 'secret space warplane' to match US X-37B

james 68

in fact they did it years ago - and better

they built a version of the shuttle (called the buran) which flew autonomously and had a greater payload capacity (than shuttles themselves even) and flew it in 1988 - america is once again behind the times somewhat in space flight

US Wikileaks investigators can't link Assange to Manning

james 68
Boffin

not very well explained

its not that they cannot prove that Manning gave the material to Wikileaks (and therefor Assange), but that they cannot prove that Assange actively helped/assisted or coerced Manning into doing so.

a subtle but important point.

Sarah Palin calls for US to stand by North Korea

james 68
Paris Hilton

err...

Ok let me get this straight - - if the current US governments response to North Korean aggression, which is to send in carrier group of one carrier, 3 destroyers, a missile cruiser and at least one nuclear attack submarine (on top of the 28,000 US military forces already in South Korea) for some hardcore posturing weakly disguised as "training" is 'showing a lack of backbone' then what exactly is a proportional military response? Another long drawn out war that cannot be won and is nothing more than a sinkhole for money supplying her corporate cronies?

Someone should staple her lips shut for 3 damn good reasons.

1.. that mad tart will start a war that will end humanity with her lip flappin if given just 0.00001 percent of a chance

2.. she would make a lot more sense if she simply said nothing....ever.

3.. i would find it terribly amusing to see if such a well practiced mouth breather could work out that its possible to breathe using their nose before asphyxiation set in.

Manned 'Surrogate Predators' fill in for robot assassins

james 68

um...

the 'life support systems' in a cessna are wings and an engine. yup i can see why that would be unecessary extra weight.

idea - kick general atomics and their $3.3million pricetag in the balls and just fit cessnas with the avionics and sensor gear. they can even be outfitted with missile pylons. shitload cheaper (cessna caravan can even be bought with the sensor package pre-installed) in purchase, shitload cheaper to run (parts cost next to nothing and are mass produced), and with spare cockpit space used for extra fuel tanks theyd beat the loiter time for predators/reapers.

but they dont look as "cool" so itll never happen

Police charge anarchist over G20 protest network

james 68

legal order to disperse?

surely you mean 'illegal order to disperse', as the right to assembly is guaranteed in the united states constitution. add to that the illegal detention of uninvolved students in their dorms and the intimidation of other uninvolved people trying to get home or pass through (constitutional right to free movement) including criminal assault of all the above through use of batons and tear gas (a chemical weapon no less) effectivly an illegal imposition of martial law as the governer of the state nor any acting official in government or the supreme court of sufficient standing declared a state of emergency.

its not some wannabe anarchist with a laptop and a mobile phone that should be in court.

OMG US states to ban txting + driving

james 68
WTF?

sooo...

if 16% of fatal crashes were caused by distracted drivers

how can they say that under 20's are the higest proportion of fatalities due to distracted driving with - wait for it - 16%?

it doesnt add up

to 20+ segment would also have to have a 16% distraction/fatality rate or the total would not equal 16%

theyre pulling numbers out their ass again

MoD pays quadruple in money + blood for Afghan helicopters

james 68

nice...really

nice to see you lot equate human lives as worth exactly £0.00

lets spend our money on equipment thats not fit for purpose so we can keep the ITALIANS in jobs and throw half of it at the FRENCH for second rate engines

why worry about the lives of those dedicated to defending us when we can save...oh we cant save any money were throwing it all away to foreign companies (agusta-westland is 100% italian owned) we cant even save british jobs because the workers in the westland factories are 80+% imports from italy and france

yeah great deal - and all the while our troops are killed, maimed and disfigured for want of better kit that could be gotten cheaper. but they dont matter do they? you lot disgust me just as much as the MoD and the cancerous overgrown government that only cares about lining their own pockets, at the expense of troops AND taxpayers.

having said that though i am rather impressed with windows7 but ive just been waiting for them to find a way to screw it up.... this could be it
