New York

[edit]Etymology
[edit]From New + York. While sharing a name with the city in northern England, the American place name originated with the English colonial Province of New York (previously Dutch colony New Amsterdam), named in 1664 by King Charles II for his younger brother James, Duke of York, to whom the land was granted; New York's eponymous Duke of York himself was later crowned King James II.
