The Walt Disney Diamond Editions is a line of DVDs and Blu-rays that began with the Blu-ray release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on October 6, 2009 and concluded with Aladdin on October 13, 2015. A successor to the Platinum Edition line that was made available on Blu-ray, DVD, 3D, and Digital, the Walt Disney Diamond Editions were later followed by the Walt Disney Signature Collection with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on February 2, 2016.

History[]

Overview[]

Twelve of the Platinum Edition titles are also featured in this range, but not released in the same chronological order when they were released of the previous line. Aladdin was originally going to be replaced by a 2-film collection featuring Fantasia and Fantasia 2000; however, these two films were removed from the lineup, and Aladdin was reinstated into the line. Pinocchio, which previously received a Platinum Edition release, was not included in this line-up, but it was later released on a Signature Collection edition.

Disney expected to release all its Diamond titles by 2016. All these movies (except for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi) have been released as Digital Downloads (e.g. iTunes, Disney Digital, Amazon Instant Video).

Alice in Wonderland, Fantasia, and Dumbo were originally supposed to be released on Diamond/Platinum Edition, but due to a presumed schedule mix-up, they were only released on Special/Anniversary Editions. Despite this, Fantasia was released in Japan as a Diamond Edition (known as the Diamond Collection in Japan) in 2011.

U.K./U.S. differences[]

Starting in 2012, some differences in Diamond Editions began to emerge between the United States and the United Kingdom. In September 2012, One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released on Blu-Ray in the UK as a "special edition", featuring a static menu and no new special features before it was released as a Diamond Edition in the US on February 10, 2015. Additionally, Cinderella was released in the UK in late August 2012, a month prior to its US release. Cinderella was also released separately in the UK in a trilogy boxset with its two sequels; Dreams Come True and A Twist in Time, unlike most other territories.

Furthermore, Peter Pan was also released as a non-commemorative Special Edition in the UK in November 2012. This edition featured no DisneyView to cover the black bars at the sides of the screen, a static menu and only a few bonus features, while the movie was still released as Diamond Edition in the US on February 5, 2013.

Furthermore, Aladdin was released on Blu-Ray in the UK as a Special Edition in Spring 2013, while still on hold in the US until October 13, 2015.

To add to the confusion, The Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid were both confirmed as Fall 2013 Diamond Editions in the UK, while The Jungle Book was kept on hold in the US until February 11, 2014.

Sleeping Beauty was released on Blu-Ray in the UK as a Special Edition in June 2014, while still on hold in the US until October 7, 2014.

Restoration[]

All films in the Diamond Edition series have had their sound and picture quality digitally restored, and most of them are presented in their original theatrical aspect ratios, with the exception of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, which are presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Disney edition not to be released on VHS, since VHS tapes had been discontinued in 2007.
  • One common trend continued from platinum editions is each selection having a trailer for the next release in the series. Beauty and the Beast had previews for the next Two (Bambi & The Lion King). The only cases in the platinum edition series where this did not happen were: Snow White which had no previews, The Lion King - probably because of the cancellation of Aladdin's IMAX reissue and The Jungle Book probably because of there not being a ready trailer due to consistent delays for 101 Dalmatians.
