Thomas "Tom" Hamilton is a character featured in the 1963 Disney live-action film Summer Magic.
Background[]
Mr. Hamilton serves as the homeowner of a house which he owns very far away from Beulah. During his life at Beulah, he worked alongside Osh Popham living at a yellow house where Nancy and her family moved to due to financial problems at Boston. This led to a challenge about the letter that Osh wrote for Nancy, which he claimed that mislaid the letter. Prior to returning, Osh claimed that Mr. Hamilton had already answered in the affirmative, only to find out that Mr. Hamilton has no idea that they are present. When he returned, he found out that he received no messages from Osh, which he revealed that he never knew about how he took the situation and that the Careys needed a house and that he wrote to him all about it, explaining that the reason why he wrote for Hamilton was because Margaret kept requesting him to get his permission and that Nancy wrote hers, telling him to read Nancy's letter before changing his mind. However, when Hamilton arrived at the party at the Carey family's house and then Nancy brings him to the party for him to attend a ceremony dedicated to his mother, Osh admitted that things always turn out right at the end.
Role in the film[]
While often mentioned throughout the film's plot, Hamilton does not appear until the end of the film, although mentions to him affect the film's plot. Hamilton first appears during the musical number "Femininity", which Nancy accidentally bumps into him as she mistakes him for Gilly. Nancy explains to him that she and her family are having a Halloween party at the barn in a plan for them to pay tribute to Mrs. Hamilton. The conversation becomes interrupted when Nancy's mother tries to get her daughter's attention, just before he leaves.
Hamilton later approaches Osh Popham in his post office, which the latter did not recognize him at first. He then recaps to Osh that he drove by the yellow house where the Carey family lives. Hamilton then replies to Osh of who gave the Careys permission to live in this house, which Osh claims that Mr. Hamilton himself was the one who gave them permission. However, Hamilton explains to Osh that no one asked him and why he didn't write the permission. Osh claims to him that he did write a letter for him every week of everything that was happening, which Hamilton explains to him that he never received any letters. Revealing this, Osh explains that he never knew about how he took the situation and that the Careys needed a house and that he wrote to him all about it, explaining that the reason why he wrote for Hamilton was because Margaret kept requesting him to get his permission and that Nancy wrote hers, telling him to read Nancy's letter before changing his mind, just as Hamilton leaves.
Later during a Halloween party at the barn, Hamilton approaches Nancy, just as Osh introduces him to Nancy, just before the two leave for the party. As Nancy's mother Margaret is hosting a ceremony dedicated to Mr. Popham and then the portrait of Hamilton's mother was unveiled, Mr. Hamilton comments to Osh about the painting he found. Osh questions Hamilton of how well is mother is feeling, which he replies to him that she is fine. As the dance resumes, Hamilton approaches Nancy who introduces himself to her. After a conversation with Nancy, Hamilton dances with Nancy together in a waltz just before the film ends.
