While initially mentioned when Margaret tells her children to be nice with Julia, she does not appear until the next day where Gilly and Peter approach her after she arrived in Beulah, Maine. While driving across the town, Nancy and Gilly share their story with Julia that there are all sorts of wildlife found in Maine such as moose, wildcats, bears, wolves, foxes, or skunks, which reminds Julia about some species of snakes living in Maine, just as the Careys continue proceeding all the way home. Julia later arrives and approaches Margaret, her aunt, just as she is happy to have her new home.
Julia then recaps to her aunt that she had a nightmare - no parlor car on the train as well as the wilderness and her time as Easthampton. She also quotes the line of what Gladys Ferguson said to her of not letting his thought get ruined by the grime of daily living as well as keeping her thoughts high. At home, Julia shares her story of Gladys' clothes being exquisite - hand sewn by the nuns at Switzerland, explaining that she knows about one boy who never goes to Harvard, while her aunt Margaret approaches her son, telling him that Julia has to sleep in his room for a while until another bed is available in Nancy's room. That night during bed time, Julia becomes frightened when Peter's large dog, Sam, and she struggles to adapt her life in Beulah, causing herself to feel uncomfortable after her encounter with Sam just as she helps her adjust in living in the new home, just as Nancy approaches her cousin to help her adapt to her new home.
The next day, Lallie Joy is helping Julia bathe in the kitchen who complains of not wanting to bring kettles of hot water upstairs, much to Nancy's shock. This, however, insulted Nancy, explaining to her cousin that the Carey family is as clean as the Ferguson family. Later on, Osh fakes himself of having an injured leg, insisting his wife to take him home, causing him to get Julia and the others' attention. Later at the church, Julia and Nancy encounter a handsome man named "Charles Bryant" who moved to Beulah to become the new school teacher. Just as they talk with him, Julia helps Nancy invite Charles for an afternoon picnic, which he agrees with them at the Carey family house's lawn, just as both of them attempt to win his affections - much to Nancy's frustration and her feeling jealous about Julia.
When Nancy returns home, she becomes jealous and frustrated of Julia who won over Charles earlier in the afternoon, thinking that her adoptive parents never cared about her, only for her to be insulted by Nancy as well as the flaws she made in the house. Just as Nancy approaches her mother, she reveals when her mother that George Ferguson wrote a letter that his affairs are looking brighter, planning to take her back. However, Nancy realizes that her mother hoped that Julia had cared for her as much as she cares for her, despite being flawed; Nancy then allows Julia to stay, causing her to apologize for her flaws.
As Halloween approaches, Julia and her cousin Nancy approach Lallie Joy who is tearfully reacting to the dress her made which she is wearing, only for her and Julia to take off the dress while Nancy explains to Lallie that what is inside her that counts, not her dress. Julia and Nancy both take part in singing the musical number "Femininity" to Lallie, who has a crush on Gilly, followed taking part in the song, as they help redesign Lallie's dress. To this, they were able to redesign her dress.
During Halloween, everyone else prepares for the party; Julia and Nancy help Lallie Joy get ready for a party, telling her to walk formally and how to act around Gilly when she meets him. Julia later approaches Charles Bryant, who was not expecting her that she would be ready, just as the two get ready for the dance Furthermore, Julia attends a ceremony dedicated to Mr. Hamilton's mother hosted by Margaret. After the portrait was unveiled, Julia and everyone became impressed. She is last seen resuming her dance with Charles Bryant during a waltz at the barn.
