Charles Bryant is a character featured in the 1963 Disney live-action film Summer Magic.
Background[]
Charles is a young man who serves as the teacher of a school at Beulah in Maine. Ever since he lived in Maine, he became the new schoolteacher as part of his career at school. In spite of his duty of being a teacher, he is also shown to have a like for picnics, such as when Nancy and Julia Carey wanted to invite him for a picnic during the summertime. However, he is shown to have a dislike of sunlight, as indicated when Julia provides shade for him throughout the picnic sequence.
Role in the film[]
Charles is first seen talking with Henry Lord outside the church, where the latter introduces him to Margaret Carey. During their conversation, Nancy and Julia comment on him as the new teacher. Henry then explains to Charles about needing new people that would meet him, just as he introduces Nancy and Julia to him as their new teacher. Nancy and Julia approach Charles, discussing with him that he should come to the Carey family house for a lawn party, which he agrees.
Charles then approaches Nancy who offers him a glass of lemonade, which he agrees during the picnic, followed by two scoops of ice cream that Gilly gives to him. Just as Julia arrives late, she uses her parasol to provide shade for Charles due to the intense weather, much to Nancy's frustration. During a conversation with Julia, she attempts to "win" over Charles' affection, only for Nancy to interrupt. However, throughout a montage during the party, Charles became interested more in spending time with Julia rather than Nancy, which only made her jealous about Julia. Later during the "On the Front Porch" sequence, Charles sits next to Julia during a quiet evening, much to Nancy feeling jealous about this that Julia "won" her affection towards Charles.
Charles later appears again at the end of the film where Julia approaches him during the Halloween party. He then explains that he never expected for Julia to get ready for the Halloween party at the barn, much to his surprise. Just as Julia approaches him, she sets out to go on a date with Charles. Charles later dances with Julia at the end of the film after the ceremony dedicated to Mr. Hamilton's mother just before the film ends.
