Echo is a Disney+ original series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe centering on Echo. The series is a spin-off from Hawkeye and is followed by Daredevil: Born Again. It is the tenth MCU Disney+ series and a part of Phase Five. It was released in its entirety on January 9, 2024.
Synopsis[]
The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.[1]
Plot[]
In 2007, young Maya Lopez suffers a car accident that kills her mother and causes her to lose her leg. Her grandmother Chula, vilifies her father William, breaking their family apart. Maya's mother's death is due to William attempting to leave the employ of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. With no other option, William takes Maya back to New York City. Years go by and Maya is raised to be a killer. Despite her handicap of being deaf and an amputee, she becomes a well-trained warrior. As depicted in Hawkeye, Maya loses her father and gets informed by Clint Barton that Fisk is to blame for his death. She shoots Fisk in the eye, but unbeknownst to her, he survives.
In the present, Maya returns to her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma to continue her task of shutting down Fisk's various operations. She gets the aid of her well-meaning cousin Biscuits, her uncle and roller-rink owner Henry, and her divorced grandfather Skully. She attempts to avoid contact with her other cousin Bonnie and Chula for fear of hurting them further, but they eventually learn of her return as well. During one of her missions, Maya suddenly develops powers that apparently allow her to heal and dispel some energy, but attempts to ignore it. Flashback reveals that her ancestors, which traces back to Chafa, the first human, all had similar abilities.
Fisk confronts Maya with the prospect of coming back to him, still showing some devotion to her. Maya outright refuses and Fisk decides to go after Chula and Bonnie. Maya is visited by the spirit of her mother Taloa who tells her to embrace her family and to stop running, further confirming that her powers are "echoes" of her ancestors trying to help her. Maya, Henry, Biscuits, and an empowered Bonnie and Chula fight off Fisk and his men. Rather than killing Fisk, Maya uses her powers in an attempt to free him from his pain, but he rebukes her and flees. Maya finally finds peace and happily reunites with her family. Elsewhere, a defeated Fisk watches a news report about New York City's upcoming mayoral campaign and becomes inspired.
