Would you pick one of these 10 designs to be Illinois' next state flag?

Besides the designs chosen from a state competition as finalists, you’ll also be able to vote starting in January on whether to just keep the current state flag instead or to revert to one of two past versions: the 1918 Centennial Flag or the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag. Legislators will make the final call next year.

Will Illinois have a new state flag next year?

The Illinois Flag Commission has released the 10 finalists in its competition to come up with a new design for the state flag.

Starting in January, people will be able to vote online at www.ilsos.gov/stateflag on whether to keep the current design, go with one of the 10 finalists or go back to one of two past versions: the 1918 Centennial Flag or the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag.

The 10 finalists play with older flag designs or try something new by incorporating Abraham Lincoln or the state’s beloved monarch butterflies.

The state commission picked the finalists from nearly 5,000 submissions.

After the public vote, the commission will recommend a design by April to the Illinois General Assembly, who’ll make the final decision.
