Chicago’s next general election is set for Nov. 5, 2024. For a selection of key races, here’s who’s running and where they stand on the issues.

Chicago School Board
Voters will soon elect members of the Chicago Board of Education for the first time. Learn about each candidate’s background and policy priorities below.
District 1

This Far Northwest Side district encompasses Portage Park, O’Hare, Dunning, Jefferson Park, Norwood Park and Edison Park. It includes 43 schools — six rated by the state as exemplary and one as needing “intensive support.”

District 2

This North Side district encompasses Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, Peterson Park, Budlong Woods and Andersonville, along with the Far North Side communities of Edgewater, Rogers Park and West Ridge. It includes 37 schools — three rated “exemplary” by the state and none as needing “intensive support.”

District 3

This district is largely made up of Avondale, Logan Square, Belmont Gardens, Belmont Cragin, Hanson Park and Hermosa on the Northwest Side, along with Humboldt Park on the West Side. It’s home to 55 schools — none rated “exemplary” by the state nor as needing “intensive support.”

District 4

This North Side lakefront district includes the neighborhoods of Lincoln Park, Lake View, North Center and most of Uptown. It’s home to 33 schools — 11 rated “exemplary” by the state and none as needing “intensive support.”

District 5

This largely West Side district includes West Town, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, Lawndale and Austin. It’s home to 100 schools — two of which are rated “exemplary” by the state and 11 as needing “intensive support.”

District 6

This district includes some of the wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods in Chicago. It encompasses the Loop, Streeterville, the Near North Side and parts of West Town; and the Near South Side, Englewood, Grand Boulevard, Washington Park and some of Woodlawn. It has 51 schools — four rated by the state as exemplary, six as needing “intensive support.”

District 7

This district sits in parts of the Near West Side, South Side and Southwest Side, including the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, Brighton Park, Archer Heights and parts of Bridgeport, Armour Square, McKinley Park and Gage Park. It’s home to 79 schools — seven rated “exemplary” by the state and three needing “extensive support.”

District 8

This sprawling, largely South and Southwest Side district includes West Lawn and Clearing, parts of McKinley Park, Bridgeport and Gage Park, plus most of Back of the Yards, Chicago Lawn, Ashburn and Garfield Ridge and half of the South Loop. It’s home to 65 schools — three “exemplary” by the state and three as needing “intensive support.”

District 9

This Southwest Side district includes Chicago Lawn, New City, West Englewood, Chatham, Greater Grand Crossing, Ashburn, Auburn Gresham, Beverly, Mount Greenwood, Washington Heights, Roseland and West Pullman. There are 93 schools — three rated “exemplary” by the state and five as needing “intensive support.”

District 10

This South Side district stretches down the lakefront encompassing Oakland, Kenwood, Douglas, Hyde Park, Woodlawn, South Shore, Burnside, South Chicago, Riverdale, Calumet Heights, the East Side, Pullman, Hegewisch and South Deering. It has 89 schools, two rated as exemplary by the state and five as needing “intensive support.”

Cook County State’s Attorney

Democrat Eileen O’Neill Burke is a former prosecutor, law division judge and appellate court justice. Republican Robert Fioretti last ran for the office as a Democrat in a failed bid to unseat State’s Attorney Kim Foxx during the 2020 primary.

U.S. Congress

Voters in each of Illinois’ 17 congressional districts will elect one member to serve a two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Illinois currently is represented in the U.S. House by 14 Democrats and 3 Republicans.

Illinois State Senate

The Illinois Senate has 59 members, but not all seats are up for election at the same time. Instead, state senators serve two four-year terms and one two-year term each decade, though the pattern varies from district to district. District lines are redrawn every 10 years based on the U.S. Census.

Illinois State House

The Illinois House of Representatives has 118 members, with all seats up for election every two years. There is no limit on the number of terms members can serve. The current makeup of the chamber is 78 Democrats, 40 Republicans.
