The team from Colectivo (2901 Maybank Highway) announced its closure on Instagram today. The post reads, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the closing of our doors on August 31st. Maintaining the quality of food and service that you deserve has become unsustainable for our staff and families. We are incredibly grateful for the support you have shown us over the past year. Join us this week as we celebrate the incredible memories we’ve built together before we close.” The caption is a heartbreak emoji.

Colectivo opened on Johns Island on September 6, 2023. The restaurant came from chef Alex Yellan, who was always drawn to Mexican food — he grew up in Arizona, studied abroad in Mexico, and his first cooking job was at a Mexican restaurant. He wanted to bring flavors like mariscos, birria bone marrow sopes, and “loco” fruit with chamoy to the Lowcountry.

When it opened, Yellan told Eater, “We want people to experiment. We want people to be able to try new things. We want to be a little bit left of center on most things — whether that’s music, drinks, or food.”

Fans still have a few days to enjoy large platters of carnitas ribs, adobo lamb, cochinita pibil, and more.
