Promising comfort food with a modern twist, Jacksonville, Florida-based Maple Street Biscuit Co. finally unlocked the doors on its James Island store. The flaky buttermilk biscuit specialists took over corner space “U” at the James Island Center at 1739 Maybank Hwy., which was formerly home to the shuttered James Island Cleaners.

The fast-casual, family friendly Maple Street Biscuit Co. serves only at breakfast and lunch and never on Sundays.

The menu is full of almost every combination of biscuits imaginable, including a sticky maple, the Squawking Goat with fried chicken and goat cheese, plus biscuits and sausage gravy, and entrees such as a vanilla bean waffle with Asiago and pecanwood smoke bacon baked in.

The comfort selections also extend to the sides, including bluegrass grits cut with cream cheese and the hashbrown cake stuffed with Gouda cheese. There’s also a kids’ menu, as well as multiple coffees, teas, and juices to choose from.
