2 NYC Barmen Team Up for Folly Beach Venture

Listen up beach-goers: There’s a new bar headed for 106 E. Hudson Ave., named Lowlife. As reported by Charleston City Paper, Manhattan restaurateur/barman T.J. Lynch is co-owner of the project and announced the idea is to open a “simple, a casual, neighborhood beach bar,” adding that Lowlife will have “solid cocktails, slushy machine, and loaded Tecates.”

Lynch is partnering with Matthew McGarry, former bar director at Screen Door, but who moved here from NYC, with experience developing booze menus for oyster bar Cru Nantucket, Fatty 'Cue, and Fatty Crab, among others.

Lynch co-owns Mother’s Ruin and Loverboy in Manhattan. Both are said to be super unpretentious with great drinks and above average bar fare.

When asked why Folly Beach, Lynch replies, “We just love it there. We looked for almost three years and saw so many locations all over Charleston — but never saw any workable spaces in Folly. When we finally found one, we did everything we could to snag it.”

He says that he wants Lowlife to be “super-friendly” with “great food and drinks,” and when asked what makes the bar stand out on the beach, he adds, “We’re not too concerned with standing out, just concerned with making people happy.”

Look for Lowlife to open in the spring.
