The BSAC Resistance Surveillance Programme has been gifted to the University of Dundee so this unique and important longitudinal surveillance study will continue to tackle the challenges of AMR.

The BSAC Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Programme closed in 2020.

This flagship programme ran from 1999 to 2020 and amassed a collection of almost 100,000 bacterial isolates from bloodstream and lower respiratory tract infections. The programme also led to the publication of a rich repository of peer-reviewed papers, all of which can be accessed below.

This invaluable collection is now housed and managed by the University of Dundee in collaboration with the University of St Andrews. Both universities are at the forefront of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research, with international experts working on sequencing, diagnostics, vaccine development and therapies including new antibiotics, combination therapy and repurposing of antimicrobial agents.

Data on Isolates

The BSAC Resistance Surveillance Project has built up an unrivalled collection of bacterial isolates from bloodstream, and lower respiratory tract infections. Together with the extensive information on their resistance profiles, this forms a unique resource for further research.

The BSAC surveillance collection is generally more useful than ad hoc collections because the isolates were collected according to a defined surveillance protocol and from a large number of clinical centres.

Unlike a single-centre or special-interest collection, it can be seen as broadly representative of respiratory and bloodstream pathogens in the UK and Ireland over the study period.

The skewing impact of outbreaks is limited by the multi-centre design, and the simple inclusion of consecutive non-duplicate isolates guards against selection bias and over-representation of ‘interesting’ or highly resistant strains.

Isolates included are:

Lower respiratory infections: Community-onset from October 1999 S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis
Lower respiratory infections: Hospital-onset from October 2008 S. aureus, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Enterobacteriaceae
Bacteraemia: Gram-positive groups from January 2001 S. aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, enterococci, S. pneumoniae, other alpha- and non-haemolytic streptococci, beta-haemolytic streptococci
Bacteraemia: Gram-negative groups from January 2001 E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteeae, Serratia, Pseudomonas.
Bacteraemia: minor groups 2001 – 2007 [small numbers of assorted other Gram-negatives]
