Robert Cooper Grier (1794-1870) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1846 after a nomination from President James Polk. He retired on January 31, 1870, and passed away on September 25, 1870. Prior to joining the court, Grier was a judge for the District Court of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1]
Grier was one of three justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Polk, though was only one of two confirmed. He served during The Taney Court and The Chase Court.[2]
Education
Grier received an undergraduate degree from Dickinson College in 1812 and his legal education by reading law.[1]

Grier was nominated by President James Polk on August 3, 1846, to fill the vacancy left by Justice Henry Baldwin. Grier was confirmed by the Senate on August 4, 1846, and received commission that same day. He retired on January 31, 1870.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice William Strong.
