I am a Geologist and the Councilmember for Reno’s Ward 2.

For three decades I have co-owned my own mineral exploration business and am currently the only elected scientist in our local government. I have a BS in Geology and a Masters in Public Policy and Public Administration. Prior to being elected, I served as the Nevada State Water Planner and as Executive Director of the Truckee River Flood Authority.

I am known to my constituents as "the Do-er.” I have championed the new geothermally-heated Moana Pool, wild horse management, a new Virginia Range trail, and public safety and traffic improvements. I started ReLEAF Reno, a program to double the trees in Reno.

I am passionate about affordable housing and water issues, and an advocate for smart growth. I am accessible to my residents and strongly committed to public involvement in decision-making.

As President of an 8-County economic development district (WNDD) I have helped bring millions to our region for infrastructure and broadband. For 6 years have chaired the Washoe County Animal Advisory Board and the Washoe County Debt Management Commission.

I am an avid gardener and an amateur photographer, and love animals.

  • I am committed to public service and being accessible. I believe in public participation and transparency in our government. I care about people's lives and the issues they hold dear.
  • I have a get it done attitude. I am a "do-er."
  • Results Matter.

My focus is on local issues which affect Reno residents' quality of life. For Reno's Ward 2, those include:

• Public Safety – We must adequately fund our police and fire services and support them in all ways, and fund mental health.

• Smart Growth and Sustainable Water Supplies – I am passionate about affordable housing, that sufficient, clean water is available, and that the potential impacts of growth are thoughtfully evaluated and properly mitigated.

• Roads and Traffic – Adequate infrastructure must accompany growth. Roads must be easy to navigate and safe to cross (zero fatalities), and we must accommodate different modes of transportation – including walking, biking, micro-mobility, and ADA access.

• Parks and Recreation – Residents have identified outdoor recreation as one of Reno's best features. I am passionate about enhancing our Truckee River and 87 parks, and adding new pool facilities, outdoor playing fields, and walking trails.

• Small Business Support – Small business are the key to a humming economy. Our newest business support programs include easier business licensing, fee waivers, and direct financial support.

• Sustainability - Reno is one of the country’s fastest warming communities. I have sponsored numerous initiatives to mitigate climate change and enhance sustainability, including: ReLEAF Reno – a program to double our city’s tree canopy; pesticide free parks, community solar, and haz & e-waste collection.

2014

On her campaign website, Duerr highlighted the following issues:[5]

Build on our strengths

  • Excerpt: "We live in a great place. We need to celebrate and support our current residents and home-grown businesses. We should strategically target the individuals, communities and companies who are naturally inclined to love what we have, and get them here."

Job growth

  • Excerpt: "We must grow intelligently. As the population in the West continues to climb, only the cities that carefully plan their resource management will prosper. Water and energy will continue to be major issues in Nevada and across the West, and we must plan carefully in order to maximize our ability to grow and prosper, while managing our resources wisely."

Connection, collaboration and consensus

  • Excerpt: "We need to continue to connect and engage our people, places and ideas. We must close the gap between UNR and downtown, bring entrepreneurs together with investors, and connect our experienced wisdom with our young energy."
