Structure

Mission

As of 2014, the mission statement of the Montana Office of Public Instruction read:[1]

“ The Montana Office of Public Instruction provides vision, advocacy, support and leadership for schools and communities to ensure that all students meet today's challenges and tomorrow's opportunities.[2] ”

Superintendent

The current Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction is Elsie Arntzen (R). Arntzen assumed office in 2017.

State Board of Public Education

The Montana Board of Public Education consists of seven members, all of whom are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Montana State Senate. Members serve seven-year terms. The governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction and Commissioner of Higher Education serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of the board. In 1978, a student representative was officially added to the board. The board is responsible for setting the standards of accreditation for the state's schools, creating a system of teacher certifications, reviewing teacher certificates, adopting policies for special education of handicapped and gifted and talented students and acting as the governing agency for the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind.[3]
