Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Virginia Department of Education reads:[1]
“ | The mission of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Public Instruction, in cooperation with their partners, is to develop policies and provide leadership that improve student achievement and prepare students to succeed in postsecondary education and the workplace.[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The current Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction is Lisa Coons (nonpartisan). Coons assumed office in 2023.
Board of Education
The Virginia Board of Education consists of nine members appointed to four-year terms. Board members are appointed by the Governor and approved by the Virginia General Assembly. State law limits members to two terms on the board. The board's responsibilities include establishing graduation standards, developing annual standardized tests and overseeing school accreditation.[3]
